HONGKONG, 15th January.-The volume of busine a transacted during the period under re- view is very much larger than of the preceding fortnight, and freights coastwise are firm. From Saigon to Hongkong, 7 and 8 cents per picul offering for small carriers, and there is not likely to be much demand in this quarter until Febru- ary. To one port Philippines, 28 cents for prompt. and 30 cents per picul for middle February load- ing; to Japan and Java, no inquiry for ready boats, but some for March shipment. North Coast Java to Hongkong, 26 cents last and offer- ing; to Japan, 32 cents per picul. Rangoo, to Philippines, two fixtures reported, one at 47 and one at 48 cents per picul; to Japan, tonnage is wanted. Coal freights. re firmer. From Moji to this, $1.50; to Foochow, $1.90; to Singapore. $2; to Philippines, $3.50. From Rajang to Hongkong, a small handy sized steamer has been closed on a lump sum basis, at $8,750. Time charters. A fair business has been done, particulars as below. The following are the settlements:-
