HEMP.

Messrs. Waruer, Barnes & Co. Limited of Manila, in their circular for 16th December. state:-The market has ruled very strong during the past week.» America has very manifestly been trying to depress the situation, but U. K. has proved itself the stronger factor and, owing to activity there, dollar prices have advanced more than proportionately. It is probable that we shall see receipts just under 1,000,000 bales for the twelve months, and although this will prove a record year, consumption appears to have kept pace, and there seems little doubt but that we shall carry over a visible supply considerably less than the last two years. It is possible that during the

next six weeks we shall have more or less average receipts, but arrivals during February and March should materially increase." Dealers are still very firm and for the small quantity of free hemp to arrive, available for this months shipment, they ask prices much above the parity of sterling values. We quote fair current to-day at $28.50 per picul, buyers and no sellers, equal at exchange 1/9 to £38.5.11 per ton f. o. b.

Exports since1st January have been :-----

To Atlantic United States 481,211 bales, against 399,099 bales in 1902, to United Kingdom 41,968 bales, against 364,299 bales, in 1902, to California and Oregon 45,362 bales, against 31,436 bales in 1902, to Australia 15,328 bales, against 9,467 balės in 1902, other parts & local consumption 56,25% bales, against 24,216 bales in 1902,
