CRICKET,

TEAM FOR SHANGHAI V. 8×RCOMBS #MITH'S XI. This match was played on the Cricket Ground on the 3rd inst. and resulted in a brilliant victory wickets. Owing to Ward having strained his for the Interport team by 104 runs and 4 leg on Friday, a place was found in the Shanghai XI for Walter Dixon, while de Paris played instead of Garde on the other side. The chief feature of the match was the fine batting of Tarner, who went in with one wicket down for 52 on his side and scored 61 out of 131 added

for the next three wickets. Though not equal in finish to Turner's performance, Smith's 66 was a capital innings; and Lumsden's hitting in the last po tion of the game was a sight worth witnessing. He and Cooper made 22 The Interport of Sercombe Smith's final over. team added to the inpression which it made the previous week, and it is with feelings of confidence that the Eleven can go up to Shanghai-confidence that they can at least make a good fight.

It was about noon when Sercombe Smith went to the wicket accompanied by William Dixon, the bowling being entrusted to J. T. Dixon and Bird. The start was bad, as the left-hander got ril of Dixon in his third over, the score being 10. Irwin joined Smith, and runs came, though slowly, unt 1 at 46 Smith fell to a catch off Lumsden (who had taken up the bowling). having compiled 23. Maitland and Rimington alone of the remainder made any show, and the total had only reached 129 when the last man was out. All six bowlers who were tried met with success, Lumsden and Dixon bearing the brunt of the attack. When the Interport men went in the game became far more live'y, and R. Hancock, Lieut. Smith, Turner, H. Hancock, and ams·len treated the bowling with some severity. Sercombe Smith's side's total was passed with two wickets down, and though Arthur and Dixon got out cheaply 233 was on the board for 6 wickets when the bell rang. Score and analysis :-

CLUB.

The annual general meeting of the Craigen- gower Cricket Club was held in the pavilion at Wongueicheoug, on the 3rd int,® Mr. W. D. Braidwood presided over a large assembly of members.

The notice convening the meeting having been read, the CHAIRMAN proposed that the report with the accounts for the past season be adopted.

Mr. L. E. LAMMERT seconded the motion, which was carried.

President for the ensuing season, with the The Chairman was unanimously re-elected following office-bearers-Hon. Secretary, Mr. A. E. Asger; Hon. Treasurer, Mr. G. Rapp, Committee, R. Basa (capt.), L. E. Lammert (rice capt.), A. O. Brawn, M. E. Asger, J. L. Staart, and L. A. Rose.

Discassion on various mitters took place, and before the meeting terminated the following proposal was unanimously passed:- That the members desire to place on record their high *ppreciation of the valuable services rendered to the Club by Mr. M. E. Asger as captain for many years past, their regret at his resigna tion owing to ill-health, their wish for his speedy recovery, and their hope that he may able to resume his captaincy next year with as much success as he has done in the past, and a

letter be forwarded to him to that effect."

Of the

The annual report is as follows:-The com mittes have much pleasure in submitting their report for the season 1992-3. The season was

very successful one in every way 22 matches played, 17 were won and 5 lost, all of them being keonly contested. Mr. R. Basa, who heads the list of batting averages with 16.6 in 22 innings, has won the Belilios Challenge Shield outright, having secured the best average for the third time. It will be remembered the Shield was presented by Mr. E. B. Belilios, C.M.G., to the Club in 1893, and its conditions were that before becoming the property of any person, it must be won by him two seasons in succession or three times in all. The following are the previous holders:- 1893-99

1899-1900 1900-01... 1901-02 Mr. R. Pestonji obtained the best bowlin g analysis, with an average of 4.9 for 58 wickets.

The amount of subscriptions being inadequate, and the expenditure having increased, there remains at the close of the season a balance of only $33.92. The refreshment bar pays its way well.

The total number of members is at present 54. Lawn-tennis was resumed during the summer months, and there was greater enthusiasm shown in the Tournament; the entries being double those of last year.

The final in the scratch singles was won by Mr. A. O. Brawn, and the same gentleman and Mr. J. P. Jordan won the doubles,

44

The members held a very successful 'at home on the 31st January last. During the afternoon a return match with the Volunteer Coronation Contingent was played, which ended in victory for the Club, and the various prises were presented.

The thanks of the Club are due to the Presi dent for his annual crickėt prizes.

We regret to report that Mr. M E. Asger, who has captained the team so ably since the formation of the Club ten years ago, has owing to several reasons felt himself compelled to resign his post.

Dr. Dominador Gomez was sentenced at Manila on the 29th ult, to imprisonment for four years and two months and to pay a fine of 3,250 pesetas, his offences being the foundation of an illegal association, sedition, conspiring with cut-throats, etc. He will be allowed no bail while appealing.

The Manila Chamber of Commerce accuses Collector Shuster with a grave break of confi- dence, disclosing business secrets of foreign merchants, and giving Dr. Niederlein, head of the St. Louis Exposition Board, private samples and invoices. Mr. Shuster seems to be making himself popular with foreigners in Manila,
