HONGKONG, 4th September, 1903-During the past week the August settlement has been negotiated and brought to a fairly satisfactory conclusion, but the re-opening of our market has revealed no improvement in business gener- ally, and we have again but few transactious to report.
BANKS. Hongkong and Shanghais after small sales at $635 have eased off to $6324 sellers. Londou quotes £63. 10. 01, ex divid. nd. Na'ioulsar quiet at S. Saud withou! business.
MARINE INSURANCES. Unions c་h be placed in small lots at (84971. China Traders
are slightly better with buyers at $64 Yang- tszes have sold at X135, and Coatous at 8181. the latter closing in further request.
FIRE INSURANCES-Hongkongs are casier with small sellers at $325. Chinas have been
booked and more shares are obtainable at 8863. SHIPPING.-Hongng, Canton and Marnos have still further declined, and are now procur- able at 24. Indo-Chinas after sales at 885 and $84 have dropped to 882 sellers. Douglass can be procured at the reduced rate of $38, and Star Ferries at 827 (ol ) and $17 (new). Shell Transports after sales at El are still in request at that figure. Chi and Manilas are un- changed at $20 and $15 for the old and new issues respectively, with ellers.
REFINERIES.-China Sugars have sold at 894 and are now procurable at $93 uzons after a

A kind of panic has taken place in Farnham, Boyd's this w.ek, and the rate which only two days ago was Tls. 150 cash has been swept down by persistent sellers to Tls. 130, at which rate shares can be had. We can discover no special reason for this, beyond the present exceptional difficulties of finance. Forward rates are about on the equivalent of cash, and shares could pro- ably be had at Tls. 135 for December. Shanghai Honkow Wharves. Our quotation of Tls. 225 must be understood to be purely nominal; there is no market for this stock at present. MINING. -Chinese Engineering Mining Cos. have been placed at 'Tls. 7.25 for bearer and Tls. 880 for London Scrip. Weihaiwei Godown, Whirves & Co. at $20 fully paid up.
