average consumption in the city is about 9 gallons per head. The Government should take into consideration the great quantity used by all kinds of trade, thereby reducing the actual domestic consumption to about 7 gallons per head, which is not exdıgsire. I coafond Earopeans use more water than Chinese as 9 gallons would larely suffic for one European bath alone. The New Water Bill is now before the Connoil: I hope the two Chinese repre- sentatives may watch the interests of their compatriots more closely Thanking you for insertion of this in your paper.-Yours, etc.,

THE NEW PUBLIC HEALTH AND BUILDINGS ORDINANCE.
TO TE EDITOR OF THE DAILY PRESS.
Hongkong, 6th August. SIR. Regarding this fexed cubicle question. there is one point that should like to have cleared up. The fia: has gone forth uuder the new Ordinance that landlords are to remove all illegal cubicles on their premises. That seems simple enough, but my question is this: Suppose a lenant rents a house from a landlord and erects a cubicle of his own, a private cubicle has the landlord or anyone appointed by him power to remore that cnbicle against the will of the tenant? It seems to me that he has not, and that any attempt to remove it could and would be met by a summons for trespass and damage. It seems to me also to be rather an important point, and it is one that troubles others besidesYdurs, etc.,

The CHAIRMAN said-Gentlemen,-As the report and statement of accounts have been in your hands for some time, with your permission we will take them as read.. Your directors are pleased to be able to p.esent such a satisfactory report on the past year's working of the Com- pany. On turning to the accounts, you will observe that while recommending a dividend of ten per cent. for the year, we are abl to make auiple provision for writing off substantial sums for depreciation of stock, &c. and to carry forward to new account a sum of $4,757.42, this sum being a little in advance of the amount carried forward from the previous year's working. I should like to say with reference to the amount your directors propose to write off stock on hand-$7,000-that this amount is necessary in consequence of the depreciation of many articles in which we deal, owing to climatic influences, constant changes of fashion, and various other causes not imme
The CHAIRMAN said Gentlemen, --I propose with your approval to take the report and ac- counts as read. They are, I think, put before you in such a form as to clearly show the present position of the Company. An improved result has attended the running of our Wes; River steamers, and upon the Hongkong-Canton line our earnings notwithstanding lower rates have diately under our control. By making ample grossed practically the same figure as the pre-provision in this direction, we bring our stock rious half-year, but on the Hongkong-Macao line earnings have fallen off considerably owing to our having to compete with two steamers which are running in opposition at very unre- munerative rates. It is not politic that I should make more detailed reference to this
matter here, beyond assuring you that it has the close attention of your directors. Increased pay to those in the service, the disbursements of our extra steamer the Kinshan, and heavier expenditure on the Honam and Powan in order to put them into first-class order, all contributed to the reduction in our net revenue as compared with the previous six months. Notwithstanding the reduced profit your directors decided to recommend maintaining the usual dividend of 10 per cent. for the half- year, and I trust you will approve not only of this but also of their recommendations with regard to the disposal of the remaining balance. Although the amount carried forward to the current half-year is not so large as usual, yet it represents over 2 per cent, on capital. It has appeared to your directors advisable to provide farther tonnage for the West River trade, and they have joined with the China Navigation and Indo-China Companies in acquiring the steamer Kwong Hing-renamed Tok Hing-to run between Canton and Wachow in conjunction with the Nanning and Sainam until such time as a new steamer contracted for

It is satisfactory to note that our uet profit for the year is more than represented by our cash assets of come $30,000 A better proof, I venture to say. cannot be had of the soundness of any trading concern. With reference to our new premises in course of construction in Des Voeux Road, we hope to be in occupation in the early part of next year. There is nothing else to which we wish to direct your attention. If any further information is required, I will be pleased to answer any questions.

We have writ ten off $1,000 for the launch Gladiator We and placed $6,000 to the reserve fund. have done this more with the idea of the security of the Company aud placing it on a very solid foundation. The dividend is some- what larger than we have been able to pay in the past. Perhaps the most important thing in connection with a business of this sort is the stock. The stock we have taken great care to have thoroughly verified and properly valued, and we feel it is now in the books at a figure which, in the ordinary way of business, will be inore thau realised, so that we feel quito confident it is standing in the books at aothing more than its real value. I do not think there is anything more to say excepting that if there are any questions anybody would like to ask 1 shall be pleased to answer them before moving the adoption of the report and accounts.
There were no questions, and on the motion of the CHAIRMAN, seconded by Mr. BONNAR, who said great credit was dus to the general mau- agers for their conduct of affairs, the report and accounts as presented wers adopted and passed.
