CRICKET.

J. T. DIXON'S XII v. R. B. GARDE § XII. Although a scratch game, the above match, played on the 14th inst., proved to be quite as interesting as many of those with more highe sounding titles, and the form shown was every bit as good as that usually ́displayed on the ground of the H.K.C.C. As will to seem on looking at the sides, by far the majority of the players were Naval men and this fact points to the conclusion that, for the ordinary member of the Club, even the "Off" day of the Ruces Holds greater attractions than a mere game of cricket. However, it was something to bo able to raiso a game at all.

A start was mado at 11.50, Garde's XII-tak- ing the first innings. Constantine did not stay Jong, but Garde and Crabtree made a splendid stand. Both played excellent cricket, and in spite of several changes in the bɔwling, they were still together at one o'clock, the telegraph then reading 130 for 1 wicket down. After in they coutinned to play sonndly and it was not until the total had reached 162 that Gardo was caught for an admirable 89. Crabtree did not long survive, as he left at the same total, having compiled an excellent 53. These two batsmen bad added 146 runs to the score in about an hour and twenty minutes-a most dreditable performance. Shelford, whom it is 4 pleasure to welcome back to his old haunts, played very well for 27 and was ably supported Tho by Mackenzie, who scored a useful 22, others, however, did not do much and the inuings closed for the gratifying total of 233. Dixon, for once, was entirely ineffective with the ball, but Lamble and Fawcett, who have not lately met with much success in this department, both came out with excellent- analyses, the former taking 6 wickets for 52 and the latter 5 for 54. The flelding gouorally was poor, though few catches were missed. It' will be noticed that "extras" took a rather prominent place on the score-sheet.

}

Dizon's team started fairly well, Fawcett and Gouldsmith both making useful score; of 17, but Cooke failed, and with the exception of Dixon, Allenby and Meaden, none of the side played up to form. Dixon and Allenby both played good cricket, and while they were together matters looked rosy for their side. However, wheu they had added 69 for the fourth wicket, first one and then the other was out-is curiously enough, for exactly the same score and total disaster was only averted by the stub- born defence of Meaden. Too much praiss canust be given to Meaden for his admirablo defensive lunings, and he undoubtedly saved his side from defeat. As it was, time came to their rescue and, when stumps were drawn 8 wickets were down for 162, the match thus ending in a draw decidedly in favour of (arde's team. Constantine was by far the most successful bowler, taking 4 wicket. for 31.

extras The fielding was again weak and were again very much in evidenco. The following are the fall scores and analyses :-
