victory in the Foochow Cup race, Mr. The MAIDEN STAKES; Cruickshank being the rider. The event of the day was of course the Derby. There had been mach speculation on the result. Three at any rate of the entrants were known to be upo‣ very level terms, and there were more than one rumour about dark li res. The b'ne ribaud fell to Colonel Hughes's Brilliant, and the victory was a popular one. The Colonel had 627,006.84 stayed in Hongkong after his leave had ben grauted in order to a e tho Derby run, and he $4,764,802.62 | deserves the success which attended him. Legacy was strongly fancied. The mare was full of go but suffered misfortune. Wheu she was going strong after passing the post the first time Diamond ¡ell iu froot and she had to swerve to the cutside to esc pe disaster. This caused her to loss ground and wind; con- sequently when she challenged Brilliant in the home straight she failed to make an impression.
