SHANGHAI, 27th January (from Mes: 19, Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report) There is very little to

Teport about market since we last wrote on 13th instaut as business is now cloud for the Chinese year which has been a very lad on for importers as well as Chinese. It is therefore worthy of mention to notice how the native dealers ahd merchants are looking forward to the annual hina New Year settling day. As far as we càn learn there are no symptoms of any financial troubles whatever and prospects for the coming year are considered to be good enough to enable four new b.nks to begin business. Some un- einess was aroused in some quarters by the sudden drop in Tentsin exchange, which after touching, recovered somewhat, and clses steady at 930. This movement at on e stopped dea ers from speculative purchases, but the mer- chants viewed the position with little anxiety and in some quarter it is said further fluethi- ations in Northern exchange are unlikely as the Chinese Govern ent thr ugh their Vic roy have taken very drastic measures to stop nativ banks from manipulating the rates of exchange. The above is the only thing of any note that has happened during the interval, as there is no news from any of the other outports worthy of

mention
