Herman Bactlake, the German chief engineer of the French coasting steamer Hoikow, is now lying in the Governmeat Civil Hospital, suffer- ing from injuries inflicted in an attempt to take! his own life. The steamer was on the passage from Hoihow to Hongkong, and when near the eutrauce to the Hainan Straits the second officer discovered Bactlike climbing the rail with the evident purpose of throwing bioself into the sea. He seized hold of the engineer and ulti- mitely led him back to his cabin, where Baethke, on the pretence of looking for some letters, secured a pocket-knife and slashed himse facro 's the throat before the other could do anything to prevent him. The second officer wrested the kuife from him, and in respous to his calls for assistance Captain Merrilees and the chief officer e .tered the cabin. Measures were im- midiately adopted for stopping the flow of blood and these were successful. When the Hoihow arrived hero at two o'clock on Monday afternoon the incident was reported to the owners, to the German and French Consuls, and latterly to the polic, who had the injured mau removed to the Government Ciril Hospital. where he is doing well, his injury not being a vital one. Bacthke is said to have been drinking hard shortly before the occurrence,
