chiefly sheetings, and while the turnover amongst Į second hands has been large it is genera ly admitted that a total of between fifty and sixty thousand bales has been arrang d for arrival in the spring on a sterling basis. Here and there some c'sh sales have been mad but they a e far from being general and the bulk of the business has been for payment just before the opening of the Tientsin season. The other outports are comparatively quiet although Szechuen co tinues to take a few lines of their particular goods. As noted above New York is mee ing this market but the same cannot be said of Manchester where prices are firm and it is only in exceptional cases that business has been done although we a:e informed that in many cases the differences lave been smalt. In Liverpool Cotton is now quoted 4 d. 5.50

Shipments from England for the fort- night ending 19th instant amounted to sixteen million yards. This circular closes an unfortun- ate year for importers who up to the end of April had very fire prospects. After that date how ever the collapse in both local and sterling rates of exchange and the firmness of Home markets all combined against them and the last portion of the year un'il a fortnight ago was hopeless. For the coming year we wish them prosperity.
