The reorganisation of the craiser squadrons which is now taking place is a most important departure by the Admiralty. The home cruiser squadron is to cousist of two divisions; the Mediterranean c: niser squadron, under Sir Pa'dwin Walker, will have as its crack ships th Bacchante and Aboukir, both of the 12,000 ton Cressy class; and to the China squadron, to wh ch the Gressy herself is attached, the Leviathan will be added, and will be the flagship of the cruiser squadron, and on the Austra lasian Station there will be the Spartiate and Europa, both of 11,000 toas.
The hearing was resumed in the Koba Chiho, Saibansho before Judge Bayenaga and two Associate Judges, of the action brought by Mr. Robert Hughes against Sir Marcas Samuel and other partners of the firm of Messrs Samuel Samuel & Co. The claim in this case was for a share of the profits to the amount of 15,566 yen and 3,113 yen of the opium business ia Formosa carried on by Messrs. Samuel Samuel & Co. of Kobe and Yokohama. Mr. Hirata appeared for the plaintiff, but the defendants did not appear and were not repro- sented in Court, and the case was proceeded with in default of the defendants. Mr. Hirata having stated the subject matter of the claim and explained the petition, judgement was given for the full amount claimed.

Mr. P. Eduljoe says in his Report, dated Hong- Long, 2nd January:-The course of our market during the last fortnight has been quite erratio and puzzling. The fluctuations on the other side have not been reflected in our market here, which ha. been controlled by purely local conditions. Recently, with very large indents from Shanghai, advancing prices in Bombay and a steady ex- change, values were slow to move, and this in- teval, with a considerable subsidence in the Northern demand, greater depression in the interior, and in smaller movements than in Octo- ber and November, prices have advanced 50 renta to two dollars per bale. In the absence of any can only presume satisfactory explanation we that prices have been affected more by manipula-
tion than by any consideration of demand or supply.
No. 61 and 8%. have been very quiet throughout with small sales at close.
No. 108. continued steady during the early portion of the interval; subsequently moderate orders from Shanghai combine wit' speculative inquiries from local dealers have had the effect of advancing prices 50 cents bo $1 per bale in special spinnings.
No. 128. steady at quotations, hut little doing. No. 16s. show the continuance of a minimum of dmand and some occasional rise in price.
somewhat firmer
No. 203. in good speculative inquiry owing to compa ative cheapne s and denuded stocks. Prices may be quoted $1 to 2 higher.
Local Manufacture.
- A. feeling prevails in the market for local mill products and sales of about 1,200 bales have transpired on the basis $98 for No. 1o 8. and $100 to $1 for No. 128, prices showing an advance of fully one dollar.
Japanese Yarn.-Quiet but firm at late rate, business of the interval being sales of about 500 bales Settau No. 20a. at $125 to $126.
Raw Cotton. - Despite advances on the other side and smaller shipments, Indian descriptions are without enquiry and with the quieter feeling sel'ers are easier in their rates. Sales of the fortnight amount to only 200 bales Bengal at $25. Exporters to Japan have been in evidence and shipments of about 700 bales Superfine Bengal to Kobe are reported. Nothing doing in China Cotton. Estimated stock 1,800 bales Bengal and 500 Chinese. Quotations are $22 to $24 Indian and $20 to $27 Chinese.
Exchange on India shows little or no fluctua- tions and clo es to-day weak at Rs. 218) for T/T and Rs. 218 for Post. On Shanghai 72} and on Japan Yen 763 for $100.
The undernoted business in imported and local spinnings is reported from Shanghai during the fortnight ended the 22nd ultimo, viz : —
India.--Total sal· 8 8,525 bales, comprising 1,710 bales No 103., 560 bales No, 128., 1.114 bales No. 16, and 141 bales No. 208., prices inducing to be rather easier. Estimated unsold stock about 49,000 bales.
Japanese. Total sales about 12,00 bales on the basis of Tls. 87 to 91 for No. Ies. and Tls. 90 to 94 for No. 208., closing firm.
Local:-Total sales about 2,500 bales at Tls 78 for No 108.. Tls. 8 for No. 14s. and Tis, 83) for No. 208., closing steady.
