custumes of well, workmanlike appearance, and so some of the tone was lost, but it is to be hoped that the Hon. Secretary will not be discouraged and that the precedent will be adhered to.
The Polo Committee, I hear, are much per- turbed in mind about the very slack attendance of playing members just lately, but hope that this state of affairs won't last. The ground was never in such good playing form as it is just now, so it is a pity more of the many men who own animals that could play if a little trouble were taken with them do not join in and begin, for having once started I am sure they would be the keenest supporters of Polo.
The Interport Rifle Match over and for the third time in the history of the match Hongkong takes third place, the previous occasions being in 1889 and 1895. Hongkong. as my readers know, could only put together 875 on Wednesday, 26 less than last yeır, although the nine of the team who took part in the practice shoot last Saturday totalled £37, an average of 93 a man. Hongkong only made four scores between 90 and 100, while Mr. Stack wood seemed absolutely off colour at every distance. Mr Parkes's 97 was a consisteut exhibition, made up of 32 at 200, 32 at 500, and 33 at 600 yds. Hongkong has now wins, Shanghai 2, and Singapore 2, in 13 matches. Shanghai's expectations of rendering a good account of itself against the Southern ports have been realised and the team is to be con- gratulated upon a fine performance. Their previous win was in 1889, the first year of the competition. Singapore has added 9 points to its last year's total and Penang 60-a striking advance, which yet leaves them a long way last.
The Haskell ball has made its appearance on the Happy Valley golf links and last week an American visitor with its aid tried conclusions with our local champion. Mr. Forrest, however, successfully upheld his reputation. The visitor, however, played a round of 38 with borrowed club-no small feat. There are other Haskells about, it is said.

INTERPORT RIFLE SHOOTING MATCH.
VICTORY OF SHANGHAI.
The team chosen to represent Hongkong in the Interport Rifle Shooting Match shot off on the 12th inst. at Kowloon Range. Shooting began at 2.30 p.m. under conditions which were by no means favourable from a marksman's point of view and which got worse rather than better as the men went back. It was cloudy overhead and the light was poor though steady. Some rain fell. When the cards were returned it was found that the total score reached only 875, being 26 less than the registered by the Hongkong team last year and 18 less than the score made by the Singapore team in the present match. Mr. J. Parkes took first honours with a total of 97. The arrange. ments in connection with the match carried out by Mr. Mowbray S. Northcote. Appended are the detailed scores :-

such a miserable exhibition of batting been seen on the Club ground. A shooking start was made when Hill was bowled by a full pitch before he had scored, and the side never re- covered from it and followed one another in dismal procession to and from the wicket. A paltry 26 runs was the result of their
of first innings, and course they had to follow on.
Their second attempt was a litte more creditable than the first, but they were all out for a poor total of 72 and so retired beaten, as stated above, by an innings and 26 runs. Carter bowled with great success in the Club's first innings, taking 6 wickets for 6 runs, and Butt was the most successful bowler in the
second innings. The Tumar's fielding was good as a whole, but the Club did not show much better form in this department of the game than they did in batting. The following are the scores and analyses :

CRICKET.
XI OF THE H.K.C.C. v. H.M.S. "TAMAR." The Club team was far too weak for the Tamars in the abors match, which was played on the Club ground on the 8th inst., and was badly beaten by no less than an innings and 26 runs. The Tamars won the toss and took the first innings. Their start, however, was any- thing but a good one, as the first 6 wickets fell for 24 runs and they had only scored 33 when the seventh wicket went down. This state of things was brought about by the deadly effective- ness of the bowling of Lamble, who, in his first 4 overs, took 5 wickets for 7 ruos. On Green- stock joining Solfleet, however, a different complexion was put on the game, as the new- comer began hitting at once and made his 35 out of 43 added while he was in, in 12 minutes. Solfeet found a useful partner also

to 124. After his sensational opening, Lamble met with no further uccess, and his analysis at the end of the innings was 5 wickets for 42. There seemed to be no reason why the Club team should not make the necessary 124 runs, but, it may be said at once, they never looked like doing it; indeed, the less said about their performance the better, for seldom has
