THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND

FOOTBALL.

The Rugby match on the 1st inst. between the H.K F.C. and Mr. Pringle's team was won by the latter by a dropped goal and three tries to a dropped goal. Neither team was very strong, and the Club was one short from the beginning and two short most of the second half, Goggin injuring his knee and retiring. Pringle played a fine game for his side.

season

The opening cruise of the new took plas on the 1st inst., when shortly after 2.30 p.m. a large fleet of vessels followed the Commodore's new yacht Dione to the back of -tonechtters' Isla d. Little time was lost in i starting the race which followed, a sine qua non of which was that cach vessel should bare a lady at the tiller. In more than one case this rule was observed somewhat more accord- ing to its letter than its spirit, but an interest- ing race resulted, in which the Dione and Vernon opened thei careers in promising Istyle by finishing well ahead of the rest of : the fleet. A pretty struggle between these two resulted in favour of the latter by a small margin At conclusion of the race the Com- modoro (the Hon. F. H. May) presented the on board the Dorothy where the various com- prize to Mrs. Robinson, who sailed the Vernon, petitors enjoyed the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Hastings,

On the 2nd inst. the first Clab race was sailed in a nice whole-sail breese and there was a good turn out of yachts in all the classes. The course was to the Eastward; which gave a good test of the beating powers of the new boats in the initial stretch to the Channel Rocks. Vernon Dione and Alannah all had a good start in the Championship class. the first-named being to windward, but Bonito was very indifferently served in this respect. Shortly after the start! Vernon when on the port tack endeavoured to cross the bows of the Alannah which was on the opposite tack, but a foul resulting the formed retired from the racy but was sailed round the course to see how she might have done had she been racing. Dione and Vernon both bad a useful lead at the first mark having fairly held last year's champion Alannah, going to windward in a good breeze. On the run to the Kowloon Rock the old boat steadily gained on the two new ones and decreased their lead! still more on the reach across to Meyer's Buoy, which was rounded with very little between the three, Bonito being a considerable way astern On the beat back to Channel Rocks the new boats again more than held Alannahı and began the second journey down wind with a substantial lead. The ran and subsequeo, reach over the secoud journey to Meyer's uoy gave much the same result as the same positious of the first round, albeit Alannah did not close the gap so much. On the ran to the line Alannah headed Vernon which was sailing' somewhat to leeward of the former, but a friendly puff of wind brought about a reversal of the positions and an interesting and fast race resulted in Dione finishing 4 seconds ahead of Vernon, which was in turn 30 seconds in front of Alannah, Bonito did not reach the line until some time later. Alannuh, although beaten, was not disgraced and should have some interesting tussles with the new boats in the course of the season.

The one design class also sailed an interest- ing race, in which there was little between the four, the eventual winner being let up by a bout of luffing between the Min aud Kathleen on the second reach,

CLUB v. H M.9. OCEAN.'

This match was played on Thursday afternoou, and the Club won by goals to 1. There were some changes in he Club team, Mr. Silk and and R. H. Carter. The Club had the misfor Dr. Martin, R.N., taking the places of J. Hooper tune to lose Dr. Mart n's services shortly after the start, as he injured his knee, aud had to retire. This left Murphy to do the work of two backs, and he played excellently, continually stopping the Ocean's rushes; "he was well supported by the halves, Tulloch especially playing a fine game Thornhill and Dartnell were very useful in the forward division, and were instrumental in notching the Club's 2oals. Considering the fact that the Clab played 10 men only for a greater portion of the game, they must be congratulated on their victory. Of the Oceans. Barrett, Hall and Lampen showed good form, but there was nothing to choose between the others. They lacked the good combination which is so often apparent in naval teams, and we were glad to see the Club team doing better in this respect. Capt. Luard, R.M.L.I., and Mr. Scott, H.M.S. Blenheim, kindly acted as referees. The Club team was :-Goal, T. C. Gray (captaiu); backs. L'r. Martin, R N. and L. Murphy: half-backs, A. W. Whitlow, Mr. Silk, R.Ñ., and Capt. Tulloch, R.A.; forwards, P. P. J. Wodehouse, C. A. Parker, Lt. A. P. Solfleet, R.N., Lt. Badba Thornhill, R., and Dr. Dartnell, R.N.

The Coreau Government has at last esta. blished a proper system of weights and measure. ments. A Seoul telegram dated the 21st alt. says that a law to this effect was promulgated on that day. The measures and weights are to be manufactured at the Government factory at a place near Liang-an, and the instruments at present in use in the country are to be prohibited in due course of time. The standard of mea- surement and weight-which bas differed, according to localities-will thus be made uniform over the whole country. The despatch adds that the 150,00 yen recently borrowed from the Daiichi Bank of Tokyo, have been employed in this connsation.
