CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT.

value of leaf tobacco. Most of the cigar factories | have suffered somewhat severely from various causes-labour, insurrection, etc, but we are in- clined to the belief that the worst is over and that, the extensive inter-island business done formerly in cigarettes (a profitable source of revenue to cigar factories) will be resumed in the near future; we trust so. We regret to find this company had to withdraw $11,000 from Reservo Fund; latter account now stands at $81,0 0. Oriente Hotel Company have held their fourth half- #9 will be seen from yearly meeting, and, figures given below, result was most disastrous; notwithstanding, shareholders present at the meeting raised few pertinent questions, and the closure was promptly applied when there appeared anxiety on the part of one person present to quote figures which could be proved, for the accounts were passed with little or no discussion of impor- tance. On December 31st. 1901, 817,985.39 was carried forward to P. and L. account, yet loss on half-year under review was $11,473.25. It should be mentioned that the 0. H. Co, Ltd., only ran the business four months out of the six, and that in two weeks of these four months a profit was made. A question raised as to why wages and salaries had increased from $21,636.9; the first year, to $56,787.10 on the second year, was an- swered that it was due to different systems of book-keeping; that may be so, but $35,153.20 seems a huge increase, more especially so when the fallowing figures are considered, from which it will be seen that while expenses were 47 and 52 per cent. for half years ended 31st December, 1900, and 30th June, 1901, respectively; when the Company was under the old management, present managing directors ran them up to 90 and 103 per cent. during corresponding periods in 1901 and 1902, so that ex: enses of old management for one year totalled 99 per cent. of gross earnings, against 193 per cent. (an increase of 94 per cent.) of present management.

Correct figures are hard to combat. This enor- uous difference in net earnings of $59,364.46 in favour of the first year's management, was made when rates, etc., were lower.
