The Japanese cruiser Tuk o has been ordered to Weihaiwei, where she will take part with the British squ dron in celebrating the Coronation of King Edward on the 26th inst.

It is officially stated that a clause has been agreed upon in the Special Commissioners treaty whereby China undertakes to remove within two years the artificial obstructions to the navigation of the Canton River.

The Débats (Paris) says that the name most frequently mentioned now as the 'probable suc- cessor of M. Doumer as: Governor-General of Indo-China is that of M.; Ch. Laurent, one of the heads in the Ministry of Finance.

Amoy is hoping that a British man-of-war will come to the port to take part in the cele- bration of the Coronation on the 26th June, as there is to be a grand display at Amoy on that day, for which preparation is going on.

During the second day (Thursday, of the libel case O'Shea v. Cowen at Shanghai, little progress was made. The case will last several days. This is the case arising out of an article entitled "The Shanghai Liar in a paper belonging to Mr. Cowen.

The N.-C. Daily News correspondent at Swatow writes that the native merchants are fighting the new lekin by a policy of" Sit still!" The authorities have not as yet dared to make the proposed levy effective and the native mer- chants show no inclination to help them out of their difficulty.

A decree has been issued in Indo-China providing for the occupation of Cambodia by a company of Cambodian tirailleurs. The decree places, on all occasions, the commandant of the force under the authority of the commandant of the naval base for all questions concerning defensive measures,

The people of Formos are beginning to cut their hair. That sounds like an idle announce ment, says the Japan Mail, but it means a great deal. It means final abandonment of the life of an outlaw. From many districts news of the removal of the pigtail is announced, and the general belief is that the change has been brought about by the extensive operations undertaken against the rebels from the 3rd to the 20th of April. A whole brigade of troops was employed, and after driving the rebels from place to place they finally brought them to bay and killed or captured a great number, having only a small list of casual ies themselves -ove killed and about 20 wounded. A Peking telegram of the 2nd inst. to Japan says:--The Russian Minister to Peking has lodged a strong pr test with the Chinese Govern- ment against the agreement between Grest Britain and China for the transfer of the North- China railway. He declared that the Russians in Manelinria will not be withdrawn un'e-s the agreement is cancelled. The British M.nister to Peking is reported to be considering the withdrawal of the agreement, but the Com mauders of the Allis are unanimously of opinion that the supervision of the railway should be retained by them, and it is expected that a Committee to superintend the railway will be elected from all the Powers and not only from Great Britain, Germany, and. Japan, was originally proposed. The conference foreign Ministers have failed to arrive at any

decision on account of the absence of the German and other Ministers. It is under- stood, however, that the conferencs will interfere with the resolutions arrived the Council of War of the Allies, attitude of Viceroy Tuan will ultimatel the question of the transfer of the Administration.
