The cfficial Turkestanski Viedėmosi states that the regulation hitherto in force requiring foreigners to obtain passes every time they visited any of the Russian possessions in Central Asia has been repealed. From the present month foreigners are permitted, without any restriction, to visit any part of Central Asia, excepting the districts of Kushk, Termes, and Kerki.
We see from the Straits papers that six Chinamen, now undergoing sentence in Penang prison, are ordered to be banished from the Colony for life. We trust that this will not mean that this Colony will be their next resting- place. In view of the fact that undesirables from other ports so often turn up in Hongkong afterwards, helping to swell the criminal class, it would be an improvement if such exiles from cne British Colony were prevented from land- ing-in another.

As the Dutch troops in Jambi, Sumatra, advance inland against the native rebels, they come upon traces of long abandoned gold mines. It has long been known that Upper Jambi-is rich in gold and the fact has often been mentioned in Dutch official reports. The people of Jambi tell wonderful stories of the They men- vast stores of gold in the interior. tion the district of Limun as the most promising. In that quarter there is said to be a mountain of gold. It is certain that the natives, with their primitive appliances, find plenty of the Not far precious metal in the mountains. from Liman is Korinchi, sn independent state. much of which is goldbearing. From there gold is exported to the Dutch possessions on the west coast of Sumatra, where it has a high reputation. Unusually few forward contracts have been made, owing to continued high prices, and consequent unwillingness of dealers to operate. 3rd Crop-The drought having now broken up, this crop is expected to give a full yield. Waste. There has been a little more enquiry for Stedm Waste, which has again been checked by the recovery and advance in Exchange. Values rule very strong in view of the scarcity of stock.

Mr. P. Eduljee says in his Report, dated Hong- kong, 6th June:-The condition of our large neighbouring market of Shanghai has greatly strengthened buyers, and it is now imposible to do business except at a considerable reduction on last quotations. The few bales reported sold are all more or less forced, and in each instance buyer has obtained a concession. Stocks, both here and in the interior, are by no means 'excessive, but the feeling amongst importers is not strong, and dealers would now appear to have gained the upper hand of the market. In revising our quotations an all round decline of $2 to $3 per bale may be noted; even these prices are now difficult to ob tain and in the near future a lower range of values is generally expected. Good to best No. 168. have suffered less in consequence of their scarcity, but No. 10s are almost neglected owing to the dis- turbed state of Kwangsi, the principal outlet for this count. We close with a quiet market tending downward.
Local Manufactures have participated in the general depression.
Japanese Yarn:-Exchange is improving and we hear of a sale of 100-bales Kurashiki (3 Horses) No, 16s., at $115.
Raw Cotton-The trade done during the inter- val in Indian descriptions has been small, but spirited. Japan exporters and the local mill are quiet, and the neighbouring country markets are alone responsible for the total business, say 642 bales, There was a run on two superfine parcels of Machine-ginned Bengal amounting to 100 bales, which were eagerly taken up at $24), whilst a choice chop of 25 bales extra-fine fetched as high as $201, the other 517 bales having been done at from $224 to $23 according to quality. The un- sold stock is estimated at about 11,000 bales. No business has been reported in China Cotton. Quotationsare-Bengal $20 to $28}; Chinese $27 to
$30.
Exchange on India closes to-day at Rs, 129} for T/T and Rs. 129 for Post. On Shanghai 783 and on Yokohama 18 per cent. premium.
The undernoted business in imported and local spinnings is reported from Shanghai for the fort- night ending 31st ultimo, viz. :—
