A Japanese capitalist made a proposal to H.E. Chang Chih-tung to purchase the Wuchang and Hanyang cotton-mills, butthe project was 440 abandoned owing to the strong opposition of 442 the Grand Council and the Foreign Office. Viceroy Chang Chih-tung now desires to lease the cotton mills, the silk filature and hemp factory to Chinese merchants.

It is reported from Paris that the former Governor-General of Indo-China, M. Doumer, will probably be appointed Minis er either of Foreign Affairs or of the Colonies. This would be considered as the inauguration of a Great Asiatic policy of France, says the Ostasiatische Lloyd. In this case, an appropriate Comment would be "Look out for squalls!”

The Japan Gusette learns from a reliable source that negotiations between Sir Claude MacDonald, British Minister, and the Foreign Office, regarding the Gilmour case, have been practically brought to a settlement. Upon the arrival of a reply from England, the case, it is stated, will come formally to an end.

Viceroy Kwei Chun of Szechuen has just issued a proclamation, requesting the people to guard themselves against the misleading reports, purposely fabricated by ill-disposed people for the purpose of creating disturbances, and draw. ing their attention to the great calamity which the late Boxer insurrection has brought on the Empire. The Viceroy's proclamation con.. oludes by offering a reward of Tls. 300 for the capture of any Boxer ringleader within the limits of Szechuen province.

The 8.8. Ajax, bound for Shanghai and Yokohama, touched a reef off Jeddah, in the Red Sea, telegraphed our London correspondent

on the 4th instant. Her two holds are full of

water, and she has been beached. The Ajax is a stern-screw steamer of 7,040 tons, and was built at Greenock, on the Clyde, in 1900, by' Scott & Co. Her dimensions are:-Length, 442ft,; ̈breadth, 52ft. 8in.; depth, 32ft. lin. The steamer, the port of registry of which is Liverpool, is owned by the Ocean Steamship Co., of whom Messrs. Butterfield & Swire are the local agents.

The Japanese newspaper Nippon strongly opposes the proposed extension of the Japanese Navy and says:-The only course left now is to maintain the existing force of the Navy. If time should como when a surplus of revenue is realised, then the extension of the Navy may be undertaken. At present such a course would only provoke the hostile feeling of the Powers on the one hand, and paralyse the business of the Empire on the other.

General Fukushima's attendance at the ceremony of the Coronation of King Edward is not the sole object of his journey. The Japanese General goes to England to arrange.| matters relating to the Army necessary as a result of the Anglo-Japanese alliance, just as Admiral 1juin will arrange matters relating to the Navy. At first General Terauchi was selected for the mission, but his appointment as Minister for War requires his presence at home.

The Swatow correspondent of our Shanghai morning contemporary writes that fighting between so-called Protestants and Roman Catholics has closed. The one side professed, he says, to be composed of followers of Mission A, while the other drew its inspiration from Mission B. In answer to enquires from the

Haien, Mission A disclaimed all jurisdiction in civil matters over lawbreakers, and allowed the law to take its course.
