THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND

Transactions.-Are extremely limited, and we

Demand. | have none of importance to advise.

Maritimas, Oriente Hotels,, and American Bank shares are enquired for, but only in small lots. Meetings.-Tramway Co. meeting held 7th ulto. confirmed sale as reported in our last circular; price, however, was $500,000 Gold, not $500,000 Mexicans as then mentioned. This gives an ex- cellent return to shareholders in the old company. Germinal Cigar Co. held their annual meeting yesterday; nett profits were $28,429.84; $28,000 was taken to Reserve Fund (making this $40,000.00), ́and $429.81 carried forward. 'New Companies.-- The Filipinos are moving with the times, and during the month under review have fathered the" Manila Building & Loan Association with a cap. ital of $250,000 Gold, and increased the capital of the Popular Co-operative Co., Limited, from $15,000 Mexicans to $200,000; subscriptions for increase in capital of latter company are now being invited. Directorate of both concerns is satisfactory; the previous effects of Filipinos in running joint stock companies redound to their credit, and we anticipate a successful career for above concerns. The Philippine Lumber and Deve- lopment Co., purely an American concern, but with local captalists interested, are inviting sub- scriptions for a further $150,000, which will make total capital $750,000 Mexicans. Subscribers are guaranteed 10 per cent. per annum on the new stock. This company was started two years ago, and has done a steady and constantly increasing business. The North American and Philippine Loan and Trust Co.,formation of which we reported in our last circular, is doing a banking business also, and we learn bas met with considerable The want of such institutions has been greatly felt, and the founders of above concern should meet with the success their enterprise merits. General.-Meetings of the Manila Invest- ment Co. and Philippine Tobacco Trust Co. should be held during the current month, as also of the Varadero (Canacao slip). The leasing of the Oriente Hotel, reported in our last circular, is now an accomplished fact; shares are well worth hold- ing, and we can recommend them to the investing public; at present figure they are cheap. The slump in this stock has been stopped; steady dividends can now be counted on.
