Mr. P. Eduljee says in his Report, dated Hong- kong, 27th March :-To-morrow being Good Fri- day, this report is issued a day earlier.
There is as yet nothing of importance being done in the interior. The rains are still holding off, but the weather is now threatening, and until these are well over and new rice planted, very little country demand may be looked for. Meanwhile our local market continues steady and strong in sympathy with Shanghai, where despite heavy importations from Bombay as well as from this port, demand appears to show no signs of abatement owing to the dearness of Japanese spinnings. No. 208. have been in good request, but scarce, and have advanced $1 to $2 per bale; No. 168, and 12s. continue steady at quotations, but owing to the disturbed condition of Kwang- sai-the principal outlet for No. 108.-this count has been neglected and may be called 50 cents to With moderate receipts and a dollar weaker. larger offtakes our estimate of stocks shows a substantial decrease on last figures and under normal conditions would not have failed to attract the attention of dealers.
Local Manufacture :~'l'he trade in locally spun thread is advancing with steady strides. The yarn is rapidly rising into favour in our neigh- bouring country markets and replacing some of the imported spinnings. Settlements during the interval amount to about 1,100 bales No. 10s, and No. 128. (both new and old tickets) at from $91 to $911 and $94 respectively, all forward delivery. Japanese Yarn: Nothing doing and in a dis- appointing condition generally.
Baw Cotton :-The market for Indian descrip- tions has been dull, and the heavy receipts, coupled with dear money and a small offtake, produced a slump in prices, more especially for ordinary Bengals. As was anticipated, exports to Japan have ceased, the recent heavy shipments from India and China on consignment account having glutted the markets in Kobe and Yoko- hama. Sellers here have been very keen to meet any demand which offered and the business of the fortnight aggregates 307 bales ordinary to Super fine Bengals at from $20 to $23), leaving an unsold stock of nearly 11,000 bales. Cotton is quiet. Quotations are Indian $17 to $24 and China $27 to $29.
China
Exchange on India has fluctuated slightly and closes to-day at Rs. 188 for T/T and Rs. 183) for Post. On Shanghai 784 and on Yokohama 134 per cent. premium.
The undernoted business in imported and local Spinnings is reported from Shanghai during the fortnight ended the 22nd instant, viz:---
Indian:--Have been in good enquiry and prices at the close are firm. Total sales 18,450 bales, comprising 7,125 bales No. 10s., 550 balea No. 188.,
