The uniform of the Shanghai Volunteers is being changed and khaki is giving place to serge. The Union says: - This change, which appears to have been an afterthought, cost the Ratepayers some Tls. 3,000 in addition to the cost of the serge and the making-up, for the Conncil had to pay Messrs. Lane, Crawford & Co., Ld., that amount for breaking the contract which they had made with the firm.
Mr. Robert Young, who has conducted the Pinang Gazette for the past twelve months, has resigned the editorship, but will contiune a member of the directorate of the Pinang Gazette Press. Mr. David Brown undertakes the editorial duties peuding the arrival of Mr. Chesney Duncan, once of Hongkong and more recently of the Shanghai New Press, who has been appointed editor, and is expected there in a few weeks.
Mr. Susemihl, the Harbour Master of Tientsin, has circulated a chart showing the result of sounding of the river taken on Wednesday, the 26th February. From the plan it appears, says the China Times, that steamers of 225 feet between perpendiculars, stem and stern, can now swing in the lower part of Tientsin Reach. The river, it is stated, "has widened a good deal, but some of the bends are very acute, and difficult for navigation by steamers without the assistance of a lug,
There would seem to be solid ground, says the L, &. C. Express, for the dissatisfaction felt at the batta allowances made to the China Field force. The extra expenses incurred by the Staff Corps and other officers are by no means covered by the sums granted, and discontent is consequently caused. The treatment certainly does not bear comparison with the terms granted in the case of officers of some of the contingents of others of the Allied forces.
