The second attempt, though not much better, saw all the horses off except the fractious America, which was left at the post. Vanity took the lead, followed by Versicolour and Lowly. | SECOND DAY.
The second day of the Race Meeting was favoured by the same excellent weather pra- vailing on the opening day, and the attendinos was again very large.
The programme consisted of ten events, as on the first day. Ichiban was favourite for the Flyaway Stakes, and won easily; Brumbie was beaten at the post for second place by My Lady; nine started. In the Great Southern Stakes five went to the post. Umpire made all the running, but could not stay, and a splendid race was won by Set, who, however, had not too much to spare from Rare Rose, the latter almost getting on level terms at the finish. Six ran in the Garrison Cup. Panch, who came in second, went gamely from start to finish, and led Ivy at one time by nearly three lengths. The Derby winner, however, settled down to it just before the Straight was entered, and won run- ning away Bay Ronald had a similar easy victory in the German Cup, Weary Willy, like Punch, setting the pace but being unable to last it out. The race for the Tai Yenk Fong Cup had an exciting finish, a ding-dong gallop between Rebel King and Bourbon Rose ending in favour of the former by half a length. Al- though the field in the Navy up was the smallest, so far, of the Mesting, the race was without doubt the best yet seen. It was an exhibition of fine horsemanship on the part of Mr. Master, who rode Ichiban, the winner — his own horse. Marda was just beaten on the post, and lost by a neck. The Exchange Plate saw another exciting and even closer finish. Hyacinth had a remarkable lead when half the course had been covered, being quite six lengths ahead of the field. The distance, from the two-mile post once round and in, was too great for him, however, and he droppal out on the run dɔwn the hill from the Black Rock, finishing nowhere. Rare Rose, who gave Set such a close run for it in the Great Southern Stakes, had only Pan lur to contend with, and the finish of a rattling race down the Straight was so close that some thought the result a dead-heat; Rare Rose, however, won, and that by the shortest of short heads. Geisha, one of the eleven starters for the Jockey Cup, did not go to the post. The race was a sourry right through, and was won easily by My Lady. In the Professional Cup, out
