MOSQUITOES AND COLOUR,
TO THE EDITOR OF THE "DAILY PRESS.
Hongkong, 6th February. SIR,-Long before I read the article quoted by you in to-day's paper. I had been told by a lady that her ankles are liable to be voraciously attacked by mosquitoes when she wears black stockings, but that she is comparatively immune when they are white. This statement ought to be of easy corroboration even in days when white stockings are not much worn, and it is certainly interesting in connection with the experiment you have recorded. I refer to the ordinary Hongkong mosquito without any knowledge as to whether it is Anopheles Maculipennis or not.—Yours, etc.,

KOWLOON LAND AND BUILDING COMPANY, LIMITED.
The thirteenth ordinary annual meeting of shareholders in this Company was holl at the offices, Victoria Inildings, at noon on the 12th inst. Mr. J. Goosmann, in the absence of Mr. F. Henderson (chairman), presided, and there were present Messrs. E. J. Hughes, J. H. Cox (directors), J. R. Michael, E. B. Shepherd, T. H. Reid, C. Georg, and M. S, Northcote (secretary).
The notice convering the meeting having been read,
The CHAIRMAN said-Gentlemen. I regre that through the absence of Mr. Henderson I am compelled to take the chair at this meet- ing. The report and accounts have been in your hands for some time, and with your per- mission I shall follow the usual course and take them as read. Owing to the condition of house property in Hongkong, we have considered it necessary, in the interests of the shareholders. to introduce a gradual increase in rent, which will account for the better dividend we are able to pay this year. All the figures appearing in the report and accounts explain themselves; in on such simple fact, the Company is run lines that I do not think I need dotain you with any further remarks. If there are no questions I beg to move the adoption of the report and accounts.
i
Mr. RED-I bare very much pleasure in seconding the adoption of the report and accounts, and in doing so I should like to congratulate the management and directors on the very economical lines on which the Com- I see from the statement of pany is run. accounts that the directors' fees amount to only $150 and the commission to agents to 8965; I think the shareholders have every reason to be pleased with the manner in which the Company is managed, but in the forthcoming year I hope it will be the policy of the directors to encourage people to take their houses who are likely to remain as permanent tenants. It would be unbecoming of me, as a shareholder, to upbraid the directors for attempting to get the highest rent possible for the houses, but I think that rents have now reached a point where the directors may expect them to remain for some time to come, and by pursuing the policy I have mentioned the directors are likely to rolain as tenants people likely to become, at least with some degree of certainty, permanent residents in the 4.000.00 Colony. As a tenant as well as a shareholder, 25,847.25 I would like to take the opportunity of again 114,693.01 calling the attention of the directors to the fact that the water supply for Knutsford $144,940.36
Terrace is exceedingly bad. This may be $ partly due to the inadequacy of the arrange- 12,700.65 ments made by the Government for the supply ·

and we hope that an attempt will be made to reorganise the water supply of the* $144,940.36

report and accounts.
