On the 24th Octobor, at the Government Civil Hospital, after a few days' illness, EDWARD ROBINSON, of Gray's Inn, Barrister-at-law, agąl 45 years.

A highly important telegram, dated Shanghai. the 24th inst., will be found on p. 342. indicating a new pro-Russian intrigue of a most dangerous kind. The wishes of the loyal Viceroys are to be entirely defied by the help of Yung Lu.

According to our London correspondent, German officials profess ignorance of the story that the head of Baron vou Ketteler's murderer has been taken to Germany. This is the first which has been heard of the story out here.

The Echo de Paris states that the French Minister of Foreign Affairs has contradicted the rumour of a conflict between MM. Delcassé and Doumer over the Yunnan Railway Mission. Indo-Chinese papers are unconvinced by this

contradiction.

It is officially announced, says the Shanghai Mercury. that thirteen large native custom stations will be handed over to the staff of the Imperial Maritime Customs on the Ist of November, in accordance with the terms of the Peace Protocol.

So unsatisfactory is the state of Mr. Ungh Clifford's health that he will be compelled to return to Europe. Mr. Clifford had already made a very favourable impression in Selangor, and his relinquishment of the office of Resident is universally regretted. It is said that this Hon. E. M. Merewether will succeed him.

The Standard's Shanghai correspondent sonds a summary of a new Russo-Chinese convention whereby Russia virtually restores to China the territory which she occupies, an instalment now, and the whole within two years' time. Russia is to guard the Manchurian railway and to drill the Manchu troops. A secret agreement is suspected behind this convention.

Le Courrier d'Haiphong comments very un- favourably on the acquisition by the French (overnment of the Boa Vista Hotelat Macao (the first intimation of which, by the way, it erroneously attributes to the N.-C. Daily News. ! whereas it was in these columns that the news was first published), and asks what is the new sanatorium for, who are the Europeans to be sent thither, and will Indo-China once more be paying for the luxury?

A Tokyo despatch of October 13th says:-It is reported that Russia is moving to obtain a concession at Shanghai in order to facilitate trade with Tailenwan and Russia. The locality claimed by Russia is reported to be near the French concession and a part of Pootung on the opposite side of the river. Russia's attitudo in regard to returning Newchwang to China is said to be related to this movement for a concession in Shanghai.

Telegrams received in Shanghai from Shensi report that the Imperial Court arrived at Tung- knan, a barrier city on the Shensi-Honan bor- ders, on the 12th inst., where a stop was made for about three days owing to rainy weather and the state of the roads leading into Honan province. Sung Shou, Governor of Honan, met the Court at Tung-kuan on their arrival there and escortedl their Majesties over the border into his juris- diction on the morning of the 15th instant, the Court staying overnight at the market town of Shontichen, the first stage of the journey into

Honan.

The new Japanese Admiralty port was formally opened at Maizurn on the 1st inst., four Admiralty ports and Japan has now having a complete equipage. A fifth Admiralty port will be opened in Japan as soon as possible, but the proposed site has not yet been mado public. It is, however, believed that the next port will be constructed either at Ohminato on the gulf of Aomori, or at Muroran on the Vulcano bay in Hokkaido. The Japanese naval authorities will then

centre their attention on completing the defences on the coasts of Formosa.

The N.-C. D. N. Weihaiwei correspondent writes:-In view of the rumour, so widely eir enlated, that many is about to acquire this port, the following letter a reply_to_en- quiries by one who was about to leave England to take up fresh professional work in the new Colony-is of some general interest :—
