CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT.
SHANGHAI, 9th October (from Messrs. J. P. Bisset & Co.'s Report). The general tone of the share market has much improved during the past week, and leading stocks show considerable ad- vances in rates. INSURANCE.-Marine. Local market is quiet. Yangtezes are wanted. Fire. No business doing, though Chinas are in request. SHIPPING-Indo-China S. N. Co. Reports of an excellent half year's working has caused a strong demand for shares, and rates have quickly risen from Tls. 103 to Tls, 108 cash, the market closing firm at latter rate. Settlements were made for 31st inst. at Ils. 103, 103.50, 104, for November 104.50, 105 and 108, for December 1 5.50, 106 to 112, for January at 111, for March at Tls. 110. Forwards are in request.-Shell Transport shares are offering, SUGARS.-Chinas changed hands at $153 for 10th instant; shares are offering. Peraks are quiet. Luzons are offering. MINING.-Chinese Engineering and Mining Co., Ld. After 15th inst. shareholders desiring to exchange old scrip for provisional certificates must apply at the Tngshan office of the Company instead of at the Chartered Bank here. Market has weakened from sales at Tis. 9.60 to sales and sellers at 9.30. A March settlement took place at 9.90. Docks, WHARVES AND Godowns.-8. C. Farnham, Boyd and Co., Ld. A firm demand brought about a large business at intermediate rates from Tis. 240 to 270 cash. but a quieter feeling now prevails and shares are obtainable at Tis, 265 to 262.50. Settlements were made for 31st inst. at 260, 265, for November 255, 270, 265; 267.50 and 270, for December 250, 252.50, 87.60, 272.50, 275 and 272.50, for January 252.50, 255, 267.50 and 270. Shanghai and Hongkew Wharf shares changed hands at Tis. 295 for 81st inst. LANDS.-- Shanghais wero placed at Tis. 99. INDUSTRIAL, -Gas shares are wanted. Major Bros, are offer- ing. Cotton Mills. Ewos were placed at Tls. 40 and Internationals at 32.50. Ice shares sold at Tis. 31.50 and are wanted. Pulp & Paper Mill shares were purchased up to Tis. 106 for cash; December shares were settled at Tis. 108. Montries are wanted. Cements changed handa at $21.25 and aro offering. TUGS AND CARGO BOATS.-Cargo Boat shares are wanted. MISCELLANEOUS.--Sumatra Tobacco shares are quiet. Langkat Tobacco Co. Shares are in de mand in consequence of the favourable report by the Managing Director just issued, and sales are reported up to 'Ils. 320 for cash; the market closes with buyers at this rate, but no sellers. Hall & Holtz shares were bought at $36. Astor House Hotel shares are quiet. DEBENTURES.—— Shanghai Land Investment 6 per cent. Deben- tures sold at Tls. 103 and the accrued interest.
