TONNAGE..
HONGKONG, 30th August.-During the past fortnight freights coastwise have improved, owing to a better demand for tonnage from Baigon. Saigon to Hongkong, 254 cents per picul has been loading, are wanted at this figure; to Philippines, paid, and more medium sized carriers, prompt
37 cents per picul is obtainable; to one port north const Java, 31 cents per picul firm. Bangkok to Hongkong, 35 and 30 cents per picul. Java to this, 25 cents per picul dry sugar. Newchwang to Canton, 32 cents per picul is obtainable. Coal freights are weaker. Moji to this, $2 25 nominal ; to Singapore, $2.75 per ton last. Time charters. A large number of steamers has be n fixed for next year's business, at rates slightly lower than Inst year's. Sailing vessels.--Nothing new to report under this head.
