The U.S.S. Brooklyn left Manila on the 18th inst, for Australia, to take part in the reception ceremonies of the Duke and Duchess of York, with Admiral Remy in command.

The fllowing appointments were notified at the Admiralty last month:--Captain F. G. Stopford, to the Talbot, Commander E. W. E. Wemyss, to the Tulbot, to date April 10.

The U.8.8. Bennington, which is here at present undergoing a thorough overhaul, has been in commission about 9 years, and when her refit is complete, will probably stay on the station for another commission.

The big new Russian cruiser Gromoboi has arrived at Colombo, and will remain there dur- ing the Royal visit. Thereafter she sails for Australia to represent Russia at the celebrations on the opening of the Federal Parliament.

It is reported that the Boxers in the South of Shantung have reverted to their original name of Ta Tao Huae (Big Sword Society) and are again becoming active, and that Yuan Shih-kai has sent troops to disperse them. Another rumour says that in Ping-yuan-haisien, Shan- tung, the natives are rioting against the officials and have killed the magistrate, and the rebellion has already spread to three districts.
