Mr. P. Eduljee says in his Report, dated Hongkong, 12th April.-Towards the close of last mail the market lapsed into a state of quiet- ude from which it was soon disturbed by the appearance of some large importera with instruc- tions to force sales. Our local dealers availed themselves of this opportunity to lay in stock to meet the resumption of the country demand next month, and having a wide and varied selection, to choose from, cleared the market of all desirable spinnings on offer, with the result that over 9,000 bales have changed hands at a decline of $1 to $2 Subsequently, reports of a slightly per bale. upward turn in Shanghai, the decline in exchange and higher cost of importations combined with the continued firmness of Japanese threads, have had the effect of arresting the downward tendency and instilling a little firmness into the market. Holders now refuse to sell at last quotations and have towards the close succeeded in recovering almost the whole of the decline. The market has again become quiet but closes strong. We thero- fore make no alteration in our quotations, which for the time being may be considered more or less firm. Supplies during the interval have not kept pace with requirements and stocks show a slight decrease on last estimate, but will shortly be augmented by heavy receipts on the water and now close at hand.
Local Manufacture:-The local mill has lowered its prices $1 per bale, but so far no increased demand has been experienced and the prospects of the concern appear anything but encouraging. fales reported are 350 bales No. 10s., at $85; 125 bales No. 128., at $86) to $86; and 50 bales No. 16s., at $93.
Japanese Yarn:-The market is bare of stock, the firmness and higher prices ruling in the home market including the possibility of immediate supplies, and as a consequence Bombays No. 168. and 208., attract more attention
We quote Settsu No. 208., $108 to $107.
Raw Cotton:-Cotton during the interval has been a dead letter, no negotiation being entered. into, excepting a forced sales of 50 bales machine- ginned Bengal at $20, which shows a decline of fully $2 per picul. Stocks are accumulating and we estimate unsold Indian descriptions at about 10,500 bales. Quotations are $17 to $20 Bengal, and Chinese $22 to $23. Stock nil.
Exchange on India after some fluctuations closes to-day at Rs. 146) for T/T and Rs. 1467 for post. On Shanghai 724 nominal, on Yokohama' 34 per cent. premium.
The undernoted business in imported and local spinnings is reported from Shanghai for the fort- night ending 7th instant, viz:—
Indian Prices have ruled irregular, till at the close the market has rallied and an extensive business has been reported on basis of late quotations. Total sales 10,225 bales, comprising ~,912 bales No. 108., 160 bales No. 128., 50 bales No. 148 400 bales No. 168., and 8,703 bales No. 108. Estimated unsold stock about 27,000 bales. Japanese Market strong and steady. Total sales about 3,000 bales, on the basis of Tls. 77 to 79 for No. 168., and Tls. 79 to 81 for No. 208.
