The text of the Convention with Japan for Protection of Estates of Deceased Persons, of which the ratifications were exchanged at Tokyo on the 25th October last, is published in the Gazette.
The King has been pleased to confer the Decoration of the Royal Red Cross upon Miss Marian Lambert, of the Church of England Mission; Sister Jessie Molyneux Ransome, Miss Lillie Emma Saville, M.D., London Mission; and Miss Abbie Goodrich Chapin, in recognition of their services at the Internation- al Hospital during the siege of the Legations at Peking.

HONGKONG, 4th April.-Among the sales re-
In anticipation of the increased dues on sugarported during the week are the following:- imported into Japan being levied in April, about 1,500,000 bags, valued at 15,000,000 yen, have already been imported. It now appears that the Japanese Government has decided, with the approval of the Imperial Diet, to put the in- creased taxation in force in October next; but before that datę arrives, it is expected there will be in Japan enough sugar to meet the home demand for at least three years.

BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais have improved their position, and after sales at 354 per cent, premium close firm at 355 per cent. premium. The London rate is £60. There is no change to report in Nationals.
MARINE INSURANCES.—Unions are in re- quest at $270. China Traders have been placed at 854 and 855. North Chinas can be obtained at $1824. Yangtsses have been negociated at various rates up to $130 and now close quiet at $125. Cantons are wanted at $155.
FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkong Fires have come strongly into favour and can be placed at $310. China Fires have experienced a sharp rise, and after sales at $78 rising to $81) are still in request at $82.
SHIPPING. Hongkong, Canton and Macaca have been placed in small lots at $33 and fur- ther shares are obtainable at the rate. Indo- Chinas have increased in favour and are in strong request at $120 cash. Sales for June are reported at $124. ́ China Manilas are un- changed at quotati ns. Douglases have weak.

REFINERIES.-Chiu Sugars advanced ra- pidly in favour up to $135 cash, at which sales were effected, but at the close are somewhɩt easier with sellers at $136. Lusons unchanged and without business.
MINING.-Punjoms are quiet at quotations. Charbonnages have weakened to $300, at which there are sellers. Raubs are again in demand and have buyers at 838.
DOCKS, WHARVES AND GODOWNS.-Hong- kong and Whampoa Docks have still further improved their position and can be placed at 8241 new share of $50 paid up, equal to

Very little business in this stock is resported owing to the unwillingness of holders to sell. Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company's shares have been placed at from 898 to $101 for cash and elose with further buyers at 8102. Wanchais continue in request at $63. New Amoy Docks are obtainable at 822 ex the dividend of $2.36 paid on the lat instant.
LANDS, HOTELS and BuilDINGS.-Hong- kong Land Investment and Agency Company's shares have been placed in fair lines at 8:00 to $201 for cash and further shares are obtair- able at the latter rate. Sales for July at $210 are also reported. West Points and Kowloon Lands are quiet at quotations. Hongkong Hotels have increased in favour and are wanted at-8120. Humphreys Estates are obtainable at $13 and sales have been effected at this rate. Oriente Hote's have sellers at $£0.
COTTON MILLS.-No changes to report ex- cept in Hongkong Cottons, which are now obtainable at $8.
MISCELLANEOUS.-Green Island Cements were booked in the early part of the week at $20, but on it becoming known that only 8 per cent. dividend instead of 10 per cent, which was expected would be paid, the rate gradually declined to $184, at which rate shares are now obtainable. China Borneos have been placed at $37 and $38, and 839 would now be paid for further parcels. A. S. Wa'son and Co.'s stock has been sold at $16) and is now in request at $17. Ices have improved and are wanted at $163. United Asbestos shares are wantod at 88). Providents can be had at 891.
