THE ARSON CASE.

The Attorney-General (the Hon. W. Meigh Goodman, K.C.) asked to be allowed to mention the case No. 9 on the calendar. It was a charge against a man named Fung San Chi for arson. He had gone very carefully into the evidence, and although he could well understand the 27.549 29 Magistrate committing the case for trial, he 10,011,85 had come to the conclusion that he could not ask the jury to convict on such "ovi- dence as he was able to lay before the Court, Under these circumstances he had not consider. ed it bis duty to file an information, and there- fore his Lordship might possibly permit the case to be discharged.

Finally they got him jammed into a sort of side channel and stole from him a gold watch and chain ́ ́ ́ One of them then made off with the watch and chain, while the other stopped guard for a little while, subse- quently following the other man down a path towards Wanchai. On getting up and going along the road Mr. Esrom met some Europeans, including a blue-jacket belonging to H.M.S. Terrible. The blue-jacket took him to the No. 2 Police Station, where he made his report. The police searched the pawnshops, and re- covered the watch and chain. The following is the report for presentation to the shareholders at the nineteenth annual general meeting, to be held at the offices of the general agents, at 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 27th inst.

The general agents beg to submit their report on the business of the Company during the year 1900, with a statement of accounts to 31st of December last.

As the result of the war in the Philippines during 1899, referred to in the last report, the refinery was silent until the month of May, but work was then resumed and continued with some interruptions until near the end of the

year.

Out of the balance at credit of profit and loss, viz.. Tls. 248.903 78, it is proposed to pay a final dividend of Tls. 13 per share, thus absorb ing Tls. 181,200, to place Tis. 35,000 to credit of repairs account and to carry forward Tls. 32.703.78.

The year under review has been a prospérons one owing chiefly to the number of transports that have taken the place of the reduced num- ber of trading steamers berthed at the wharves.
