VERNON & SMYTH'S SHARE REPORT, HONGKONG, 1st March-Our last report was dated the 22nd ultimo. The Race holidays have intervened, but in spite of this fact a very fair business has been transacted during the period under review, rates generally being well maintained, whilst in some instances, notably Banks and Docks, material advances have to be recorded.

BANKS. Hongkong and Shanghais have continued in demand, and sales cash have been effected at various rates up to 350 per cent. premium, at which the market closes with further buyers. On time sales have been made mainly for March and at prices ranging up to 350 per cent. premium. In Nationals the purchase is unchanged.

MARINE INSURANCES.-Unions continue in request at $250. Yangtszes have been placed at $124 and further business might be done at this figure. Other stocks under this heading-are unchanged at quotations.

FIRE INSURANCES.-In Hongkongs business has been done at $314 and $315, the market closing quiet at the latter rate.

China Fires are on offer at $84.

SHIPPING. Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have continued quiet during the interval and are now on offer at $34. Indos have been placed at $117 bash, at which the market closes with further sellers. Douglases have improved to $48, at which sales have been effected, and there are further buyers at this price. China Manilas and Star Ferries have buyers at quo- tations. Shell Transports are on offer at £3. 58. Od:

REFINERIES.-Chin Sugars have advanced rapidly, and $136 is now offered for this stock without finding sellers. Luzons unchanged.

MINING.-Jelebus are on offer at $51, a decline of 5) cents, and Raubs have weakened to $38 sellers. Other stocks under this head- ing are unchanged.

DOCKS, WHARVES AND GODOWNS.-Hong- kong and Whampoa Docks have been in active demand, and sales at rapidly rising rates up to 650 per cent. premium ex the dividend of 24 per cent. paid on the 26th ultimo, have been affected, the market closing firm at this figure. Kowloon Wharves have again come into favour and are wanted at $94. Wanchais have buyers at $63.

LANDS, HOTELS AND BUILDINGS.-Hong- kong Lands have been in fair request and sales have been effected at $199 and $200 cash, but the market closes with a few small sellers at the former rate. On time shares have been placed at $205 for April, $206 and $207 for May, and at $2 9 for June. At the latter rate there are further buyers. Hongkong Hotels have been placed at $1234 and $124, the market closing with sellers at the latter rate. Humphreys Estates have weakened to $12Į, at which there are sellers.

COTTON MILLS.-Stocks under this heading have been neglected, and we have no change to record in our quotations.

MISCELLANEOUS. Cements have been placed in moderate quantities at $20, at which rate further shares are obtainable. Watsons have been done at $16 and there is a pro- bability that more could be placed at this figure. Electrics (old) have found buyers at $12), and the now shares are wanted at $67. Ropes are quiet at $1674. Tramways are still in request at $200 without finding sellers. Other stocks under this heading are unchanged. HONGKONG, 1st March.-Since last report there have been lower settlements to advise owing principally to the almost total cessation of busi- ness during the Chinese New Year holidays. At the close there is a much firmer tone and rates coastwise are higher.

From Saigon to Hongkong, 21 cents per picul for medium sized tonnage is offered. To Java 37 cents is obtainable for prompt tonnage. To the Philippines there is a moderate demand at 36 cents per picul,

From Bangkok to Hongkong, 32 cents insidé the bar and 27 cents outside, has been paid and further small carriers could be placed.

Coal freights continue weak. Moji to this, $2. To Singapore, $2.50 per ton.

Sailing tonnage. The American ship Saint Paul, 1,824 tons register, proceeds to Newcastle to load for Manila under orders from owners.
