CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT
score; but he was selfish and of course fluked the shot. Another bye followed a few moments later. The Fusiliers, who had acted all along strictly on the defensive, now shook themselves up, but a run by the left wing was well-stopped by Lapsley, who kicked out of bounds. The throw-in was followed by a sharp tussle at rather close quarters in V.R.C. territory, but Chunnett saved the situa- tion by a sudden rush out, contring the ball. Brett took up the running, and after a smart run relinquished in favour of Seth, but the pass was too strong, and crossed the boundary, Eaton, to that end, tackling Seth.tance, three-quarters of a mile. Play went on, and at the interval the score stood:-V.R.C, 1; R.W.F.. 0.

As in the first half, play in the second portion of a not very interesting game was all in favour of the V. R. C. The forwards of the Fusiliers were weak, and as a result most of the work de- volved on the halves and backs, whose play. though nothing to boast of, was decidedly superi- or to that of their attacking line. Barnard's keeping was very good, but all through he was asked to do too much. The V.R.C. forwards, when viewed comparatively made a very good appearance-Seth the best of all. Among the defences, Lapsley, right back, and Lou- reiro, centre half, were especially strong. At no time, from the one-sided nature of the game, had Chunnett much to do, but what he did he did well. The V.R.C., in the second half, added- no less than three goals to their total, Yule being responsible for two and Herton for one. The last was an extremely soft thing, Barnard running out and leaving his goal absolutely unprotected. The Fusiliers were not success- fal in gaining any points, and the game ended- V. R. C., 4; R. W. F., 0.

THE REGATTA,
A RACE FOR FIVE-OARD WHALERS, BY- LONGING TO 3HE ROYAL NAVY-First prize, ROYAL HONGKONG YACHT CLUB. 320; second $10; distance one mile. Boats from the Terrible, Orlando, Dido, Mohawk, Wivern, Brisk, Bramble, Endymion and Fame had entered. The Mohawk shot ahead and main tained the lead throughout, her time being 5.4. The Bramble was second.
SCRATCH FOURS.-Distance three-quarters of a mile.
A regatta promoted by the Royal Hong kong Yacht Club took place in the Harbour on Saturday, the 20th inst. There was a somewhat stiff breeze blowing and the water Was consequently somewhat lumpy, but this did not seem to interfere to any great extent with the rowing events, four out of seven of which were confined to men-of-war's men. These proved to be the most enjoyable races of the day. The two-mile course was not, however, arranged so well as it might have been. It was from H.M.S. Wivera, kindly placed at the disposal of the Club as flag- ship by Commodore Powell, round by a moored sampan distinguished by a flag with a red ground and a yellow cross, and back again. An average of eight boats competed, and natur- ally when it came to rounding the sampan the outside boats had much the advantage of those with the shore stations. Under the circum- stances a certain amount of fouling was un- avoidable. The race for six-oared galleys was open to men-of-war's men of any nation- ality, but no foreigners availed themselves of the opportunity afforded them to com- pete. The international four-oared race had a most unsatisfactory ending. When the fini shing post was reached the view of the judges on board the Wivern was shut out by a couple of launches and they accordingly very properly declined to give a decision.
Among those who were present at the Regatta were H. E. the Governor (Sir Henry Blake, G.C.M.G.), Lady Blake, Miss Blake. and H. E. Major-General Gascoigne, C.M.G. Lady Blake distributed the prizes.
