Mr. P. Eduljee says in his Report, dated Hongkong, 4th January.-The belief in the cer- tainty of an early settlement of the political situation in Peking has greatly emboldened dealers, and business has considerably developed during the past fortnight, nearly 12,000 bales changing hands as noted at foot. Values show an appreciation of 50 cents to a Dollar per bale in No. 108, 128, and 16s, and one or two Dollars in No. 208., and holders are still asking an advance for the few bales of best spinnings remaining in stock. We do not, however, think the advance will go much further, as importers, having in
view the state of the cotton market in India, are anxious to push business while the demand lasts. The off-takes during the interval have overtaken receipts and our estimate of stock shows a small decrease on last figures. The market closes quiet but steady.
Local Manufacture: -About 1,400 bales No. 103. and 128. of the Hongkong S. W. and Dyeing Mills have been sold during the interval on the basis of $88 for No. 10s. and $90 for No. 128. The demand still continues, but the Mills have raised their selling prices about $2 a bale and business is consequently at a standstill.
Japanese Yarn:-The market is bare of stock and prices ruling in Japan preclude the possibility of any contract being put through for forward delivery; business during the interval being entirely confined amongst the natives on the basis of $104 to $105 for No. 168. and $105 to $108 for No. 20s.
Raw Cotton-Indian descriptions are quiet and weak, the local Mill is entirely out of the market, and sales of about 436 bales Bengal from $221 to $23 have transpired, leaving an estimated unsold stock of about 1,300 bales, chiefly Bengal, on the market. China Cotton is firmer and sales of about 700 bales Toongchow and Ningpo have been reported at from $241 to $25. Stock nil. Quotations are :----
:-Bengal $18 to $23 and China $28 to $25.
Exchange on India shows no fluctuation and closes to-day at Rs. 154 for T/T and Rs. 155. for Post. On Shanghai 72 and on Yokohama 24 per cent, discount.
The undernoted business is reported from Shanghai in imported and local spinnings for the fortnight ending 81st ultimo, viz:-
Indian:-Total sales 3,792 bales, comprising 1,286 bales No. 108., 100 bales No. 128., 800 bales No. 168. and 1,656 bales No. 20s, prices showing little or no change notwithstanding the decline in exchange, and market closing steady. The unsold stock was estimated at about 21,000 bales. Japanese:- Forward business had been stopped by the firmness in Japan. Sales of spot cargo, restricted by the amallness of available supply, only amount to 1,600 bales, on the basis of Tle. 75 to 76 for No. 168, and Tls. 78 to 79 for No. 208., prices showing little or no change on previous quotations and market closing firm. Stock.nil.
Local: -Total sales about 3,000 bales on the basis of Tls. 64 to 68 for No. 108., Tls. 70 to 72 for No. 148, and Tls. 72 to 74 No. 168,, prices continu- ng steady and market closing strong.
