HONGKONG, 81st August.-Malwa.-A good business has been done in all descriptions at the following rates. New $380/880 and old $890/920. Bengal-In consequence of the fresh supplies of Patna turning out of extra heavy weight, there has been a good demand for this drug, and ́a "fair amount of chests changed hands at $925/9824, closing firm. Old stock is quoted at $980. Benares changed hands at $915/920, closing steady.
Persian-Superior quality is being sold at $880/890) while other kinds are utterly neglected.

Low class threads are still unsaleable, but the
heavier counts are somewhat in request, as the
season for them has now commenced.
The tightness of money, combined with the stagnation of trade generally throughout the Empire, prevents the possibility of any improve- ment taking place in the near future. Now that the Allies have entered Peking and confi- dence is practically restored, an improvement in country demand may be reasonably looked for, and one of the first articles to feel the influence will be cotton twist, but whether an improvement in price will take place is difficult to foretell.
Local Manufacture:-Sales of 100 bales No. 10s. at $85 and of 75 bales No. 12a, at $89 of the Hongkong 8. W. and Dyeing Mills are reported.
Japanese Yarn The market is again firmer and a general improvement of $1 per bale is observable in the limited business effected during the interval, say 100 bales Kanegafuchi and 50 bales Miike No. 168. at $100, and 50 bales Ashai and 75 bales Settsu No. 208. at $98. Close firm,
holders refusing current rates. Ban Cotton-Continues to move very slowly, gnd with the exception of a sale of 55 bales Superfine machine-ginned Bengal at $24 no busi- news in any other description is reported. The stock of Indian staple is estimated at about 1,400 bales. Quotations are:-Bengal $20 to $26, Rangoon #18 to $24, and China $25 to $28.
Exchange and India has slightly advanced and closes strong to-day at Rs. 152) for T/T and Rs. 1594 for Port. On Shanghai 71).
Shanghai advices to the 17th instant report the undernoted limited business in imported and dal spinnings during the small interval of 5 BYS, VIK:

BANKS.-A few small sales have been effected at quotations. The London rate remains un- changed at £57. Nationals have been dealt in to some extent at $27.
MARINE INSURANCES.—The market con- tinues dull and neglected, with no business to report.
FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkongs remain on offer at $295, but Chinas have changed hands and are wanted in a small way at $76.
SHIPPING.-Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have found buyers at $30, closing steady at that rate. Indos have advance to $86 with but a small business at that, and previously at $82 and $83. Douglases are reported at $50, but no sales have been made: China Mutuals and China Manilas unchanged and without business. REFINERIES.-China Sugars are obtainable at quotation, but no business is reported. Luzons unchanged and without business.
MINING.-Punjoms are on offer at $5 without inducing sales. Charbonnages are enquired for at $250, but are not obtainable. Olivera B's and Great Easterns have changed hands in small lots at quotations. Jelebus after sales at $8 have advanced to $11 with sales. Baubs continue quiet and without sales at 854. DOCKS WHARVES AND GODOWNS.-Hong- kong and Whampoa Docks after small sales at 500 and 5021 per cent. prem. have advanced to 530 per cent. prom. with buyers and few if any sales. Kowloon Wharves close quiet at 886 and $59 ex div., with only small sales at 860 (new issne) to report. Wanchais have changed hands and close steady at quotation. Amoy Docks remain quiet and without business.
LANDS HOTELS AND BUILDINGS.-Hong- kong Lands changed hands in the early part of the week at $165 and $166 in small unimportant lots, and later, although the rate rose to $170 and $173, but very few shares were obtainable to satisfy a steady demand for cash and forward delivery. The market closed firm at $173 with no sellers. Hotels continue quiet with sellers and no sales at $118 ex dividend of 35 paid on the 30th inst. Humphreys have been placed in small lots at $11, and West Points at $47; and $48.
COTTONS.-Hongkong Cottons after small sales at $22 are enquired for in a small way at 819, but none seem forthcoming under $21. For the Northern Mills are taken from the latest Shanghai circulars.
MISCELLANEOUS. -Cements have found buyers at $204 and $204, closing with buyers at the former rate. Ices could be placed in small ÷ odd lots at $165. China Providents have changed hands at $94.
