Hongkong Weekly Press AND China Overland Trade Report All

There was a boat running from Canton to Chan-chun and back, on i board which there were two covered boxes, used to put presents in and in each of the two boxes were two roast ducks. About noon one day when the Captain was feeling hungry he opened one the of boxes, and on tearing open the stomach of one of the birds found a five chambered revolver snugly stowed in it. He opened the rest and found the same throughout. The same is the case with those who smuggle jewelry and other valuables. A rich merchant took his wife and nine or ten concubines, amahs, and servants on board the steamer for Hongkong, all very finely bedecked from head to foot with gold, pearls, bangles and anklets, amounting in value to several thousands of dollars. When they re- turned to Canton they were all stripped and ready for another journey of the kind.

Five pirates were taken to the execution ground and beheaded on the 28th inst., two of whom were caught in a house of illfame in Tongyulan, as I have already reported, while the other three were supposed to be pirates caught by the Customs steam-launch Foomun.

It is reported that some sporadic cases of plague have occurred in Fatshian. Beginning with fever the patients generally succumb to the attack in a few.bours.

MACAO.

[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.]

Macao, 30th March.

There is something floating in the air about changes in the Portuguese Governorships in the Far East. Some truth is in the rumours. In the case of Timor it is suggested that the ex- harbour-master Senhor Albano Alves Branco is to succeed Senhor Celestino. For Macao the name of the likely governor is not known. It is hoped that the home Government will appoint a man full of energy and possessed of earnest desire to do all he can for this colony, one who will look after her welfare and her numerous wants which for almost three years have been greatly neglected.

Since my last report about the illicit trade in arms, there have been no more such arrivals in this colony up to the present, though many petitions have been sent into the Government Office arging a request to the Hongkong Gov. ernment to allow the exportation from that colony to this. It seems t at the matter now is taken seriously.

Apart from the fact that yesterday a boy went out near the Porta do Cerco" to shoot

birds, and unluckily shot himself, so that he had to be taken to the hospital, very badly wounded, there has been nothing stirring here ́at all,

13 Victoria Street,

London, S. W. WEEKLY PRESS. SirThe Navy League desires to call atten- tion to the fact that in the three years, 1897, 1898 and 1899, the Admiralty has not spent the money voted by Parliament for shipbuilding.

The under expenditure in 1897 was £2,139,000, in 1899 £804,000 and in 1899 £1,400,000-asented. total of £4,343,000.. Thus, no reliance can be 100 YARDS FLAT RACE (CHALLENGE placed on the figures contained in the shipbuild- | Cup).-Presented by the Victoria Recreation ing programme.

i

Further, in spite of the fact that this £1,400,000 was voted but not expended in 1899, the shipbuilding vole for 1900 shows a decrease. By Mr, Gosohen's own statement the original vote for new construction in 1899 was the min- imum compatible with safety. As £1,400,000 less than the sum voted was expended, it is clear that our safety is compromised.

Mr. Goschen alleges as the cause of this un- der-expenditure Abnormal activity in ship- building,” “ Delays in delivery of materials, "Difficulties in securing adequate numbers of workman,” “ Labour difficulties,” and other cir- cumstances. ...ASTE

Many ships, it is true, are under construction, but the Navy League would point out that this

Sergeant-Major Wallace, Quartermaster-Ser- geant West, Armourer Se geant Blair, Ser- geant Bowery, and Corporal Hill,

The CHAIRMAN made a few opening observa- tions and proposed the adoption of tlie accounts. Mr. MCKENZIE shconded, and the motion was carried,

The CHAIRMAN spoke of the advisability of amalgamating the offices of secretary and tren- surer, and proposed Mr. Northcote.

This was seconded and carried. The committee were elected as follows Messrs. Skelton, Chapman, Bowery, Watson, McKenzie, Carlyle, and Smythe.

Mr. Hursthouse made a few observations with regard to the now Arms Ordinance, and suggested that an effort should be made to secure for members of the association a similar privilege to that accorded to Volunteers, namely, that they should not be obliged to secure per- mits.

The CHIARMAN and others supported this anggestion, and it was understood that the com- mittee would endeavour to secure the privilege mentioned.

Two accidents in the harbour have been report- ed to the police within the last two days, n Thursday a man fell off a cargo boat and the body has not yet been recovered. In the other the case a juok was upset and a man drowned rest of those on board being rescued by another junk which happened to be in the vicinity,
