8TA CLUB RACE.

18th February, 1900. Course 8.-Starters A class 2, 3, 7, 8, 9; B class 10 and 11. Wind, north at the start. The Dereen went off with a lead at the start closely followed by the Bonito and Maid Marian, but

Dearing the Channel Rocks the boats were bécalmed for about 20 minutes. Gloria and Iris then caught a light south air and ran away to where an easterly wind appeared to be starting, and rounded the rocks w ahead of the rest of the fleet. The two second class boats had in the meantune caught up to the A class, and at the Kowloon Rock they were all in a bunch. Gloria was round first, then | Maid Marian and Iris, with Meteor close up. When nearing Meyer's buoy, which hol these or four junks at ached to it, a frech est wind was blowing and it was expected tar! the boats would have a good time for the rest of the race, but it only lasted during the beat up to Chaunel Rocks the second time, where Doreen, by a judicious tack to the north, had got into first place, with Meteor second and Iris third. At Kowloon Rook the wind was light again and the rest of the fleet had closed up a bit. In the run to Meyer's buoy Meteor went into first place and Bonito and the Maid, getting a fresh puff, caught Iris just before rounding. It was a drift to the finish and the following were the times of cros- sing the line :-

Sir Thomas JACKSON read the notice cou- roning the meeting.

The CHAIRMAN read the report of the Board of Directors.

The CHAIRMAN said—Gentleman, it is with much pleasure that the directors have to wait upon you again with another good report. in which they can recommend a dividend of £1 10s. par share, place $500,000 to reserve, oirry forward $960,343.56 to new profit and loss account, while at the sam› time giving a bonus of 193. a share. The profits on the Chi. nese and Japanese loans, alluded to at the last meeting, are included in the present accounts. aud bare enabled as to place before you a more satisfactory statement than otherwise we would have been able to do. Earnings of all eastern banks daring the past half year have been seriously curtailed by the advance in the value of money in England and on the continent, a contingency which the meagre margins then ruling in oxohauge did not make any allowance for. Good will no doubt come out of the exper- ience of the past six months; it is not likely that banks will again place them elves in saoh a posi- tion that any increase in the home value of money will turn au appareat profit into actual loss. It is to be hoped that more suitable margins will be maintained in future than have ruled in the past, and that a Bank of England rate of 6 per cent. and a market rate of 6j per cent. will not soon, be forgotten. We, in common with other eastern binks, have recently gone back to the rate of interest of 4 per cent. for twəlve mouths fixed deposits in London; the increased value of money and its prospects in the future making such a step necessary in our opinion, It will be noticed that on the 31st December our sterling fixed deposits stood at £4,294,675 against £3,313,626 on the 30th June, while our current accounts in gold showed a decrease of £878,711, same being caused by some of the Chinese Government funds we had in current account having been transferred to fixed depo- sit account, otherwise the figures on the 31st December would have resembled very olosely A Boxing Contest for the Heavy Weight those of the previous half-year. SHANGHAI F.C,

MARINE ENGINEERS' F.C, v

As is the fiul for the English Cup to Eng- laud, so is the Marine Engineers' F.C. and the Shanghai F.C. to Shangbai--it has attained to the diguity of a classic, audo some extent holds the savour of an international game since the Engine rs' side many, if not all, the players are Scotsmen. Thus it attracts a large uumber of spectators. more particularly when, as on Satur. day afternoon, the sun shone brightly in a clear, crisp air. The attendance w is large, and included a number of ladies.
