OFFICERS OF THE UNITED SERVICES V.

CIVILIANɛ.

4

The match played yesterday (Thursday) be- tween the officers of the United Services and the Civilians proved about the best contested Rugby game this season has produced. Th Services had the stronger side, their superiority lying in their three-quarters and halves. Notwithstand- ing this the Civilians were the first to score, Johnson dribbling over and securing a try which remained unconverted. The Services obtained a penalty goal and at half time matters were equal, the register being:-

Services 1 penalty goal Civilians try...

3 points 3 points After the interval nearly all the play was in the Civilians' territory but they defended their lines very stubbornly.

The Fervices second score was the outcome of the most brlliant piece of play of the match. Lt. Gibbs made a splendid run along the right, for which he was most londly and deservedly applauded, and passing the right momeut, ona led Wilkinson to get over and score a try. A very feeble attempt to convert was made.

The Civilians continued to have the worst of it. but they kept their opponerts out and in fact gained the lead. Johnson broke away, dribbled right through the backs, and touche down in an excellent position. MoMur rie easily con- verted into a major an the score stood:-

An irregularity occurred in this last competi. tion, one of the players returuing apparently two cards for " Bogey" which was against the usual conditious-"one entry on y allowed the Green Committee, however, ou this occasion waived the right of disqualification, but it may be well to caution players against in future committing a breach of an ordinarily well known rule in cup competetions. Another point to which it may be well to drawn atten tion is the copying of returns iu place of handing in the original cards. This is not unfrequently done, bat it is very undesirable for many reasons. and may lead to disqualification. In the case referred to above the copying of a card gave rise to a mistake on the part of the player, who apparently copied the wrong oue, which he did only tied for it, the second card not return, and so in place of winning the cup

HONGKONG, CẦNTON AND MACAO

STEAM-BOAT CO., LID.

Tho following is the report of the board of directors for presentation to the ordinary half- yearly meeting of the shareholders to be held at the office of the Company, on Thursday, the 1st February, 1900, at 3 p.m.

The directors beg to submit to the shareholders the report and state:nent of accounts for the half-year ending 31st December last,

After paying ruuuing expenses, salaries, pre- mia of insurance, repairs and all other out- goiugs, there remains, including $34.648.66 brought forward from last account, the sum of 3179,088.41 nt credit of profit and loss acconut. From tuis amount the directors recommend that a divideud for the half-year of 8 per cont on capital, or $96,000, be paid to shareholders, and that 5 per caul or $39,875, be written off the book value of steamers and launches, leaving a balance of $43,213.4 to be carried forward to new account.

The steamers' earuingsa.compared with those of the corr.sponding six months of the previous year show a falling off. This is, in a great mea- sure, accounted for by the unsatisfactory state of affairs on the West River, the working of this branch of the Company's business having resulted in a loss.

During the half-year the Heungshin bas undergone the usual annual repairs and docking under Government survey, and the Powan is now laid up to receive new boilers and for a gen.

was obstructed by THE KOWLOON LAND AND BUILD eral overhaul, the cost of which will be met by

one of the three-quarters. This infringement the referee evidently considered had prevented

■ try, for he allowed one, which was converted. The Civilians after this made a decided effort to retrieve their position but were unsuccessful, the game ending with them on the attack.

QUARTERLY MEETING.

Bright cold weather was experienced during the meeting, and good entries for the various events resulted. The course was in better order than has generally been the case at this season, and though the greens were keen some good cards were returned.
