THE HON. C. P. Chater, C.M.G. RE-ELLUTED TO THE LEGISLA- TIVE COUNCIL.

MEETING OF JUSTICES ON MONDAY. On Monday afternoon a meeting of the Jus tices of the Peace was held in the City Hall for the purpose of nominating a Justice as aN unoficial member of the Legislative Council in the place of the Hon. C. P. Charter, C.M.G., whose present term expires on the 14th inst. Mr. H. H. J. Gompertg (Aotive Police Mag. istrate) presided, and the following Justices were present:-Sir Thomas Jackson, Hons. The CHAIRMAN said that on the 15th De- comber last he received instructions from His Excellency the Governor to calla meet- ing of the Justices for the purpose of electing a Justice to serve as an unofficial member of the Legislative Council in the place of the Hon. C. P. Chater, whose tenure of office would expire on the 14th of this month. The notice convening the meeting of Justices": inserted in the Government Gazette and copies were forwarded to each individual Justice, toge- ther with full particulars of the procedure to be observed in the election. The voting would be by ballot. Every Justice would receive a ballot

paper and have his name recorded by the olerk. He was now prepared to receive nomi- nations. The name of every candidate was to be proposed in writing by one Justice and seconded by another. Oficial Justices of Pence were not entitled to vote.

Sir THOMAS Jacksɔx nominated the Hon. C. P. Chater.

The Hon. J. J. KESWICK seconded.

The CHAIRMAN asked if any other candidate was proposed for election. If any other candi- date was proposed the proper course would be to proceed by ballot. If no other candidate was proposed he should call for a show of hands.
