At the offices of the Public Works Depart ment on Wednesday afternoon Kowloon Inland Lot No. 496, situate at Mongkok Tsui, was offere for sale by auction. The upset price was $1,560, but this figure was considerably exceeded. Mr. U Wan-cho being the purchaser for $3,600. The annual rent is $44.
It is notified in the Gazette that a meeting of the Justices of the Peace will be held on the 8th January for the purpose of nominating a Justice as an unofficial member of the Legis- lative Council in the place of the Hon. C. P. Chatér, C.M.G., whose term of office expires ou the 14th.
We ́are informed by Messrs. John D. Hum. phreys and Son, General Managers of Olivers Freehold Mines, Limited, that they have re- ceived a telegram from the mines, giving the result of this month's crushing as follows:- "463 tons of quartz crushed for a yield of 394 ounces retorted gold; mill rau 20 days."
We regret to announce the death of Mr. John Ambrose Clarke, navigation instructor, a gentleman well-known and greatly respected in mercantile marine circles. Mr. Clarke, who had been in China for over 30 years, had been ailing for some time, and died at the Govern- ment Civil Hospital on Tuesday of apoplexy at the age of 58 years. The funeral took place on Wednesday.
A sad accident occurred on H.M.S. Barfleur on Sunday afternoon. A bluejacket named Rodwell was aloft engaged in the preparations for the Christmas decorations, when he lost his hold and fell to the deck, the fall proving fatal. In consequence of this accident, which threw a gloom over the ship's company, the decorations. were abandoned.
At about nine o'clock on Tuesday night a fire broke out in a three-storeyed house at No 1, Ship Street, Wanchai. An alarm was given and the Fire Brigade were soon on the scene and got to work. The house where the fire originated was practically burned out, but very little other damage was done, the efforts of the Brigade to keep it from spreading being successful.
The annual installation meeting of the Vic- toria Lodge was held un the 21st inst. when Bro. R K, Mounsey was installed in the chair of the Lodge for the ensuing year. The; ceremony was performed by the Right Wor. District Grand Master, Hon. C. P. Chater, C.M.G., who was assisted by the D.G. officers. Wor. Bro. A performance will be given in the Theatre Royal on Tuesday evening, 2nd January, by the Tournée Star Company, a French operatio company that is proceeding to the United States from Manila. The artistes include Melle G. de Stirval, mezzo-soprano; premiere-chan- teuse; Melle. Lucette, comique-galbeuse; G Star, repertoire comique; and Les Leicestar s. duettistes excentriques. The performance is under the patronage of General Gascoigne and promises toe artistic and interesting, and part of the proceeds are to be devoted to the Patriotic Fund,
