TONNAGE.
SHANGHAI, 30th October (from Messrs. Wheelock & Co.'s report.)-Our freight market both home wards and coastwise shows every evidence of activity. For
rk via Suez a further rise in rates has only been postponed owing to opposition, but judg- ing from the strong demand at present existing for steamers and high prices now demanded by owners from would-be charterers, we are sure to experience higher rates. For London there is no indication of any advance at present, and business seem to have improved generally in that irection. Coast wise the demand for ton age is strong, especially from | Japan for coal cargoes for all directions, and our quotations are therefore nominal, though probably higher rates would be obtainable if ready tonnage vere offering.
