They bave their eyes open, how- ever, and are picking up what they can at cheap prices. Offers for fair lines of American Sheet- ings and Drills in stock were submitted to New York, but the shippers advised holding in view of the difficulty there is in buying anything now, The water is fulling rapidly in the Yangtze thus making the river more navigable in its upper reaches, which should soon prove beneficial to the trade with Szechuen.

Spinnings continue to advance, but it is only natural that transactions should remain on a comparatively small scale considering the high prices they have now attained. Native Cotton bas been as high as Tls. 18.50, but seems a little weaker at the close. The Indian staple has also gone up considerably andis now just as dear as China Cotton.
METALS 16th October.-(From Masers. Alex. Bielfeld & Co.'s Report)-The improvement men- tioned in last week's report has continued during the period, reports from the consuming districts becoming more satisfactory. The ruling low ex. change is also a great factor, so that a larger bu- siness has been put through during the week than for some time past. There has been a steady: demand, several good orders being booked at ruling rates, while auction sales resulted in sa- tisfactory prices being obtained. The following. are the transactious reported:-170 tons Amer. ican Pig Iron at Tls. 28.00; 75 tona Hanyang Pig Iron at Tls. 27.50; 100 tons Cobbles at 140s., c. i. f.; 60 tons Carts Tyres at 116s., c. i. f.; and 50 tons Steel Plate Cuttings at 998. c. i. f.

SHANGHAI 14th October.-(From Mossrs. Noel Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report
Piece Goods.-There is but little of interest to write concerning our warket this week, the daily transactions from stock being of the most meagre description, the trade being confined almost en- tirely to these and the Auctions. All forward business is at a standstill, cargo to arrive having been withdrawn from offer, and the placing of fresh orders is quite out of the question in both the home markets with perhaps one or two ex- ceptions; the most important of which is American Cotton Flannels. The example set last week has
