and Japanese Yarns most attention bas centred in them. The market is well supplied and able to meet all demands, which are likely to be considerable owing to the high prices of Piece Goods and possible scarcity in the near future. Local Spinners are asking more than buyers care to pay, consequently there are no sales reporte but the resales of the Yarn in Bundles show an advance of a tael and a half to two taels, Cotton bas

advanced with the advent of more rain, and spot sales to some extent have been made at. Tis. 16.30 het, and Tls. 16,00 net for forward delivery —best machine ginded.

METALS 25th September. (From Messrs. Alex. Bielfeld & Co.'s Report)Not à single transaction has been reported during the week. Prices are rising at bome, and here slightly in sympathy, but little real ordering will be done, sa we, bare repeatedly said, until present stocks are exbausted.

JOINT STOCK SHARES.

HONGKONG, 29th September-Business con- tinues quiet and rates inclined to weakness. Transactions have been few and far between and of a very limited nature. It is anticipated that after the monthly settlement an improve- ment may take place.

BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais after further small sales at 347 changed hands at 345 and 346 per cent. prem., closing steady st the latter rate; on time no transactions are reported. Nationals continue in demand” at 8264 without bringing many shares on market.

MARINE INSURANCES.—China Traders have found further buyers at $64) and Unions at $260. The latter has declared to pay a dividend of $18 subject to confirmation of shareholders at the meeting to be held on Thursday, 12th October. Cantons have ruled very quiet with sellers at $1474 and a small sale was effected at $145. Straits continue weak and without business. In the Northern Insurances no local business having taken place (except a small sale of Yangtszes the quotations are taken from the last Shanghai circulars.

FIRE INSURANCES.-The market remains very dull with no business. Hongkongs are quoted at $335 and Chinas at $88, both with sellers.

SHIPPING.-Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have ruled weaker with sales and sellers at $30 after small transactions at $30§ and $30. Indo- Chinas have found buyers at $71 and $72:10 a fair extent and the market closes steady at $72. Douglases have changed hands at $50 and $491 and at time of closing are obtainable at $49. - China Mutuals and China Manilas unchanged and without business.

...

REFINERIES-China Bugars continue weak at quotation with no business to report.

MINING.-Punjoms have found further small buyers at $8.75 to $8.90, market closing steady at $8.75. Charbonnages have improved to $245 with sales and buyers. Queens are now on offer at 45 cents without business. Jelebus, after sales at $134, $131, $14, and $141, have improved to $15, closing steady to strong at that rate. Raubs have ruled steady with sales at $82; and $63, closing firmer at $64. Olivers A & B have changed hands at quotations and Great Easterns have declined to $2 after sales at $2.50, $2.40, $2:30, 82.20, and $2:10.

SHANGHAI 23rd September.-(From Mesars. Noël Murray & Co.'s Price Goods Trade Report.). -Piece Goods. The market during the week has been interrupted by the Native holidays in con- nection with the Mid-Autumn Festival, and consequently there is once more, vory little to report.

No trouble appears to have occurred over the settlement, which is not surprising, in this branch of the trade, considering the com- paratively favourable terms on which the goods atill in Native hands were bought. The only shadow over the market is the uncertainty regarding the intentions of the high Authorities in Peking, and this the dealers here appear to have decided to risk. Even the severe outbreak of plague in Newchwang does not seem to have affected the market there, and the shipments thence, although during the first six months of this year far exceeding any previous year, are keeping up on the same scale. Litt'e news bas kong and Whampoa Docks, after sales at 580 ald DOCKS, WHARVES AND GODOWNS.—Hong- come in from any of our dependencies during the interval, as business will not be properly resumed

531 for settlements, gradually weakened and until next week, but judging by the exceptionally sales were effected at 525, 526, and 527 per cent. large purchases of Indian Yarn for Szechden, prem.. market closing much firmer at 550 shipments thither the must be on the point of being with probable buyers. Amoy Docks have found resumed. It is said the market there has ad- further buyers at $18, but close with sellers at vanced five taels a bale, but is not sufficiently that rate. Kowloon Wharves have ruled quieter, high to permit of Japanese or local spinnings with sellers at $961 and no buyers over $96, u being bought at prices current here, The sales are reported. Wanchais could be played one anomaly about the mark t is the failure at quotation but no shares are forthcoming. of prices to adequately advares at Afiction. It certainly looks as though there were some ring on, and considering the bigh prices that would have to be paid to rep are the goods a curtailment of the quantities, or total suspension for a time, would benefit the concerned as well as the market generally. A fair quantity of goods continue to be settled to arrive, but Indentors for the most part are unable to con- nect with MANCHESTER, which continues very firm with a large bu i ́ess doing, but presumably

|

not for this market. – 'l'lie demand for Strörürs bas given a decided impetus of the Indian Yarn market here, and as bolders of these Spinnings are able to considerably undersell the local and

Lands, Hotels, And Buildings.--Hong- kong Lands have ruled quieter with sellers and only small sales at $114 and $113, market clem- ing with sellers at the latter rate. Hotels have failed to maintain their position and sales have been effected at $130 cash, but élose with buyers at that rate. Humphreys have ruled stes $10 with sales at that and at $10.15, Points continue on offer at* $34 inducing buyers to come forward.

COTTONS.—Sales of Hongkongs are at $50. In the absones of local bus tions for the Northern mills are Shanghai cironlars.
