SECOND DAY,
The principal event at the Aquatic Sporta on Tuesday was the contest for the championship of the colony, held by A. A. Alves. There were seven entries and fire competed, including the Brothers Alves. "A.A." won easily, all having given up except him and his brother as the fifth length was entered. The time was 2 min. 51-1/5 sec. against 2 min. 49 sec. The greasy pole was a now feature and caused much amusement. For the prize which was offered A. J. Mackie, E. Herbst, A. Hum- phreys, R. Lapsley, and J. C. Logan tried their luck. None of them succeeded in get- ting to the box at the end of the pole, which box contained a couple of ducks, but ultim. ately Lapsley liberated them by shaking the pole and an exciting chase after them in the water ensued. Under the circumstances the prize was withheld. The swim ander water was won by J. M. E. de Carvalho last year. His distance was 180 fest. Being out of the colony he was unable to compete this year, but his younger brother made a spirited attempt, and was only beaten by E. Humphreys by two and a half inches.

Humphreys scored the first goal, A. A. Alves passing the ball to him. Then Hance passed to A. A. Alves, who, shooting from the centre, added a second goal for his side. He repeated this twice and when time was called the score stood as follows:--

Reds Whites DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES BY LADY BLAKE, After the sports the company adjourned to the Gymnasium, where the prizes were distributed.
Commander HASTINGS, in opening the pro- ́ceedings, said:-Ladies and gentlemen,-We There was a capital attendance at the V. R. have now arrived at the end of three days good C. Aquatic sports Wednesday, the ladies coming sport, and it only remains to present the prizes... up in full foros. Lady Blake, who had kindly to the successful competitors. I venture to consented to distribute the prizes, was present, express the opinion that the racing this year as also were Commodore and Mrs. Powell, Com has been of a very high standard, and probably mander and Mrs. Hastings, Consul Volpicelli | the most agreeable feature of it all is that we and Madame Volpicelli, and Viscount Suirdale. have so many promising young swimmers com. The special prize presented by Commandering on. As a Club it has been a source of Hastings for the winner of most points in great satisfaction to us to see the growing in. non-handicap events fell to A. A. Alves, the terest of His Excellency, our President, in our winner of the Championship of the Club and aquatic entertainments, and it has given us the Championship of the Colony. The great pleasure to have Lady Blake with us Greasy Pole, the prize for which was not to-day. Our pleasure, however, is not unal- awarded on Tuesday, again formed one of the loyed. We must not forget that this is attractions. Herbst, the second man on (Jorge probably the last aquatic sports that will being the first), liberated the deck, and then be held within the Club's enclosure. W. caught it in the water, a young pig which was have been tenants of this site for very many thrown in at the same time being seoured by years. We hear that we are about to be evicted, J. C. Logan. landlord's man any day. We are liable to evic- tion any day, and that without compensation I fear we could not hope to be successful in any claim for.compensation on the score of improve- ments on our property, but it must be borne in mind that we have been tenants on sufferance here, and having no security of tenure the Committee was not justified in erecting more permanent buildings than the present. But though they are not entitled to compen. sation for improvements to the property, on the other hand we have contributed very largely to the improvement of the manhood of the colony, "Go" 1 and are on that account entitled to some consideration. (Hear, hear.) We venture to think that the Hongkong Volunteers Corps Owe something to 118, ag We have been instrumental in developing the thews and sinews of the members. (Hear, hear.) We hope some day to see the Club housed in 1 better quarters. It is essential to any well ordered community that it should have some sort of association for the cultivation of manly sport, and the members of this Club feel that they can appeal with confidence to the proper anthorities for fair consideration and for assist- ance in securing another suitable site on which to continue the good work the Club was founded to foster. (Applause.) I have now much plea- sare in asking Lady Blake to present the prison. Lady BLAKE, who was received with applause, then presented the prizes, after which Comman- der Hastings, on behalf of the members of the Club, presented her with a beautiful bouquet. The proceedings concluded with three hearty cheers and a tiger for her ladyship.
