ACCIDENT TO THE STEAMER

“ICHANG.”:

The CN.8. Ichang dooked in Messrs. Boyd and Co.'s dock, Shanghai, on 23rd August, for repairs: The vessel left Shanghai on the 9th July for Vladivostook laden with tea, aud on going down the North channel unfortunately grounded in the narrowest part. The vessel was subjected to a terrible strain through the falling of the water, but no cause for anxiety was experienced. The following tide she floated and proceeded on her voyage apparently none the worse for the misadventure. However, on discharging her cargo at Vladivostock many of the stanchions in the main hold were found to be badly bent indicating that the bottom of the vesel had been lifted, and on examination a lifting of about fourteen inches was ascertained. Owing to the excellent material and care with which the ship is bailt not the faintest leak was discernible fore or aft. and the whole of the va luable cargo was discharged without a single package being damaged. The vessel has since successfully brought a full cargo of coal from Japan. Her repairs, which necessitate the out ting out and straightening of the keel plate and a number of the frames, will occupy probably three or four weeks, and in the meantime she will undergo her annual overhaul.-N. As the ladder, which is the only means of getting on board, can only be reached by entering the piece fenced in, some trouble has occurred. Yesterday, the Captain leaving the Argyll and going through the fenced-in portion was stoned, and as a result the Captain immediately fetched a policeman and had one of his assailants arrested.

“PROGRESS AT KIAOCHAU,

13:

From Kiaochau, we learn that building is going on everywhere, while sanitation is not neglected for the authorities are constracting concrete drains, some of them seven feet high, so thats man can walk upright in them. The whole place is very busy and houses hard to get. The hotels are full; even the new hotel with fortysix rooms is fully occupied, though is is infested with flies. This drawback will probably be remedied when the building is finished and the ground properly drained. Union.

This will be another link between the Philip pines and Borneo, and help to foster a steadily growing trade.
