August 5, 1899
Between 11 and 12 o'clock on Saturday morning grass-cutter was going down the hill-aide near Mount Davies when he was set upon by three men, one of whom flourished a wooden pipe over his head. In the struggle which ensued the man sprained his ankle, but was not otherwise injured He was robbed of 818 by two of the men, who at once cleared off when they had got the money. The grass-cutter kept hold of the third mau and gave him in charge of an Indian constable, who took him to the Police Station. The man was brought up at the Magistracy on Thursday and remanded, as the grass-cutter was in hospital and unable to attend.
One would think that Queen's Road West st half past ten in the morning was a nost un- likely locality for a highway robbery, and the fact that a fisherman was attacked there on Friday, 28th July, by four men and robbed shows how emboldened the bad characters in the city have become. After robbing the man of $1.56 in money and a canvas belt the robbers endea Toured to get away, but fortunately two of them were caught before they had got far, and on Saturday they were brought up at the Magis tracy. Evidence was given by complainant and two Chinese constables, and then defendants were asked what they had got to say. First defendant said-I went ont for a walk yes.
terday with second defendant. who is my younger brother. 1 was walking in Queen's Road when I saw a lot of men running up a stret. I ran up also and a police constable, stopped me. Complainant said to the constable. This is not the man; let him go;" and the constable replied, "Never mind whether he is the right man or not, we have him, keep him." Second defendant also told an equally un-likely story. First defendant was sentenced to four months' hard labour, and second defendant, who is bit a boy, to receive 12 strokes with the birch. Another highway robbery has been reported to the police. As a Chinese compositor em- ployed in Hongkong and residing in Taichau village near Kowloon City, was passing by Matauwai village on this way to Yaumati at about six a.m. on the 28th July he was at- tacked by two men, who stole from him a silk jacket, an umbrella, a cotton handkerchief, and 70 dents. în 10 cent pieces-total value $5.20. The men then made off, and the compositor, who was unhurt, reported the matter to the police.
ROYAL WELCH FUSILIERS GYMKHANA.
By the kind permission of the Hongkong Jocky Club. a gymkhana was held on the Race Course, Happy Valley, on Saturday after- noon by the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, whose band was in attendance and played selections of musić. There was
a good attendance, the weather being favourable. A most interesting programme was gone through.
THE FIRST EVENT was a scurry for all China ponies, round a post and home; distance about one furlong each way, no whips or spars. There were 25 entries, and the follow- ing horses were placed :-
Captain Warren's Snuffbox ... Mr. Walwyn's Landsuecht Mr. Johnson's Wizard EVENT 2 was a pig-sticking contest; run in four heats. It was most amusing. A horse- man trailed after him a canvas pig filled with Bladders, whilst the competitors followed with spears with which they endeavoured to pieros the counterfeit porker in a particular spot. The following four were in the final heat, Mr. Cruickshank coming off winner:-
Mr. Cruickshank Mr. Owen ... Capt. Rickman.
