The water in this mine is not quite so heavy. Bukit Hitam. In this section, prospects have very much improved since, my last report.
In the Crossout going in East from the end, of the North level the total distance is 24 ft. At 22 ft. in the lode was cut carring, good gold. We have now out into it 2 ft, and are not yet through it. As soon as the lode was out it drained the air-shaft - above. The sinking of this shaft has been resumed and I hope to break through to the crossout in about to days. The lode in the crosscut is making a lot of water. This looks well for there being a large lode in this end also. It is quite evident that the lode in this end has been thrown over to the east by the cross-course at the shaft.
South End at the Airshaft.-In this end the lode in the level and air-shaft is over 30 ft. wide and carries fair gold all through; for several feet on the West side it will go fully two ounces per ton. I have now got the shaft connected by tramway with the ore hopper, so I shall be able to send a good deal of crushing stuff to the mill from this end of the mine.
Bukit Koman No. 1 Level North. The work of re-timbering this level is proceeding steadily; only the best sawn Merbau timber is being put in for sets 12 in. by 12 in. timber being used.
Good progress is being made cleaning up the debris from the burst we had some time ago. I hope in another fortnight to have the level cleaned up and driving resumed.
I am also preparing to sink No. 2 Winze to connect this level with the No. 2 Level.
No. 1 Level South-This level has been steadily extended since date of my last report. The lode is 2 ft. wide in the face and of fair quality. It is well defined and carries a nice soft parting between the lode and footwall. Another month should about see the face of this level in a line with the No. 1 South Engine Shaft.
No. 2 South Winze is now sunk to a depth of 24 ft. in quartz and quartz leaders,
No. South Air-Shaft.—This is now drained and the sinking has been resumed. It is being sunk all in quartz carrying gold. About a fort- night should see this shaft through to the 18,089.64 stopes below and will be a great convenience for ventilating and sending down timber to this 30,318.85 part of the mine. 21,475.16 Stopes. The four leading stopes over the 876,712.33 back of this level have pinched and are from 82,534.262 ft. to 4 ft. wide, the ore being of low grade. 282,876.71 93,694.88
There is no change. in the rest of the stopes which continue to turn out good ore. 84,589.04
No. 2 Level: North End. The lode in thé face of this drive is being taken out 12 ft. wide 34,589.04 and shows good gold all through with quartz still showing in the hanging wall. I have 11,095,89
every reason to believe the lode is of great width for a considerable distance along this level the same as in the level above.
28,547.94
6,780.82 South End No. 2 Level I have stopped driving this end for the present and have started 68,885.63 cross cutting to see if the ore body is east of
the level, we are not in far enough to say any 29,280.82

As this had to be done under water it i wa requiring great care and caused a good deal anxiety. Several times the river rose right over the work but no damage,
