[March, 18 1899.

At a

in Liverpool at last week's quotation. meeting of the representatives of both Foreign and Native owned Mills held this afternoon to consider the present unsatisfactory position in which they are placed owing to the native specu Intors, it was decided, with only one dissentient, to form an Association amongst themselves, under certain penalties, not to buy Cotton over a price that is to be agreed upon weekly, Ts. 14 00 being that fixed for the ensuing week. It was thought better not to put the limit to flow at first, but it was clearly shewn that according to the cost of production: which is only tendollar cents a catty for ginned Cotton, the farmers can well afford to take a much lower price.

METALS, 18th March,--(From Messrs. Alex. Bielfeld & Co.'s Report).-Metals.-Bat little business has been transacted during the week, and there is practically but little to report.

JOINT STOCK SHARES. HONGKONG, 17th March.-The market has ruled steady, except in Bank stock, and a fair ordinary business has been transacted during the week under review.

BANKS. With some settlement shares on the market and a drop of £2 in the London rate, Hongkong and Shanghais bave ruled very weak, and a sudden drop of 7 per cent, was experienced in the early part of the week, shares changing hands at 264 and 263. Later, however, with the removal from the market of some of the most pressing lots, and a recovery of the Lon- don rate to £57.10, the market became much steadier and a demand for one or two small parcels at 264 was not met; at the time of writing small lots are enquired for at 264 per cent. prem. Nationals have not been dealt in and remain steady at $20.

MARINE INSURANCES.-China Traders and Cantons have continued on offer at quotations, but with no sales to report. Unions have been enquired for, and have changed hands in a smail way at $230. Straits and North Chinas- have also been in some demand, but no sales have been reported. Yangtazes continue ont of favour at quotation.

FIRE INSURANCES.-Both Hongkongs and China Fires continue dull at quotations with no sales or enquiry.

SHIPPING, Hongkong, Canton and Macaos ruled steady in the early part of the week, and, owing to reported satisfactory settlement of the pool arrangements, became firmer towards the end. Sales have boon effected at $28, $281, and $28 for cash, and at $29 for April; market. oloses steady at $28. Indo-Chinas remin dull and more or less neglected, sellers at $67 ruling the market. China and Manilas have weakened a little with sellers at $78 ex div. and no sales reported. Douglases have found buyers at $58 and $584, and China Muldals continue in demand at quotations.

SHANGHAI, 11th March.-(From Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report. ' Piece Goods.-The delay in sending forward the first supplies for the opening of the Tient-in sea- son bas occasioned another week of quietness in our market, in fact, but for the Auction sales business has practically been at a standstill. The interest of those engaged in this trade has naturally centred in the quantity that has gone forward. This makes a total of 51,842 packages. against 48,688 packages last year, American goods showing an increase of 12,000 bales, while Yarns of all descriptions are about 2,000 bales less, English makes accounting for nearly the whole of the balance of the falling off-some 4,000 packages. From the news received by a steamer that came in yesterday from Tientsin there was a good deal of apathy there regarding the market, left. There is still nothing of interest to report from our other dependencies, except that New chwang is almost hare of steeks and prospecte are consequently favourable so far. Very little busi- Ders appears to have been done either with Manchester or New York during the week, the markets in both places showing no signs of giving way, and buyers i ere hesitate about paying the necessary prices to replace anles at rates cow cur. rent so long as the Native dealers have low cost 88 to 42125.00 to 181.00.
