MATALS 20th Febrnary.--(From Messra ález Bielfeld & Co.'s Report). The Chinese New Year holidays are 'just concluded but the majority of the native dealers are still engaged in concluding the r festivities and have not yet resumed business on a general s'alẹ. As way have been antici- pated from our last cironlar very little business has been done during the interval; bit the native dealuri are confident that their new year. in full of promise. Since our last a few stools have been cleared, and everything is firmer at home. The native market is at aresent very well stocked and those natives who bare resumed business are conte t to wait to sell off wint thy have at a profit. Quotations for Nail Kols and Bar Iron nre given at 1888. 6. re-pectively. •Old Materials have been advancing, but the same applies to the business in this stock, the natives preferring to wait. No doubt in our next we shall be able to repor: a bright opening.
JOINT STOCK SHARES. HONGKONG, 24th February.-Business, which had scarcely been resumed after the recent Chinese New Year, has been again, retarded by the Rare holidays, and there is but very little to report. Rates have ruled fairly steady, but with an inclination to weakness.
BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais, immedi- ately after the shareholders' meeting held on the 1th, changed hands in small lots at 295 per cent. prem. cum. div., and later at 274 and 273 per cent. prem. ex div., market closing quiet at 271 per cent. prem, cash, and with some shares offering forward at a little more than equivalent rates. Nationals have receded to $20 with sellers and without sales.
MARINE INSURANCES.-China Traders are procurable at $64 but without sales or buyers. Unions and Cantons continue quiet and un- changed without business. Straits have found buyers at $7, and sales are reported at $71, but at time of closing sales have been effected at $6. The Northern Insurances remain un- changed and without any local business.
FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkongs have found buyers at $32) and $326 oum div. and Chinas at $90, market closing quiet in both stocks.
SHIPPING-Hongkong, Canton and Macaos. continue quiet and without much business, sellers at $28 ruling the market. Indo-Chinas have changed hands at $68, but there are further sellers at that rate, whilst offers to part at 869 for March meet with no
response.
REFINERIES-China Sugars remain quiet with only small sales at $176 and $175, closing negotiated at $179 for March 31st. Luzons have at the latter rate; on time a few lots have been
been effected at that rate. been enquired for at $53 and small sales have
MINING. The market has ruled very dull. with scarcely any business. Punjoms have been placed in small lots at $5.75, Caledonians at $6, Raubs at $63, and Jelebus at $7.75. Charbon- nages are still enquired for in a small way at $120 without leading to business.
18 h February.(From Mears. Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trad Re-Douglases remain quiet with sellers at $58 and port. Piec Goods.-In spite of the promise without business. China Manilas have changed there was when we penned our last report of a
hands and China Mutuals continue in demand brisk demand on the opening of the market after at quotations. The holidays, we have very little to chronicle this week. Some of the dealers resumed business on the 14th instant, but it was not until a day or two later that the Native Banks issued their cheque books and trade became at all general. As usual a certain number of complimentary transactions went through, bt the adverse at- titude of Exchange immediately after the opening soon affected are training influence on holders, the Native not being sufficiently confident to raise their offers the req isite amount to conn- teract the decline. The Yuen Fong Auction on the 16th instant settled the question regards English Cotton goods, the dealers evidently co sidering they have sufficient on hand to test the strength of the markets in the consuming districts before committing themselves with any further purchases of importance. The decline in sterling rates caused quite a rush to secure cover for out- standing transactions, it being estimated that fully £ 01,000 worth of Bank paper has been settled since the market opened, almost entirely again-t Piece Goods. I he demand is undoubtedly strong, especially for American mukes, which may be quoted fully a wace to a mace and a half high-r. but very few spot transactions have taken place from first hands; the dealers, however, have resold between two and three thousand bal s to the Tientsin merchants at satisfactory prices. which ba- encouraged them to make some further purchases to arrive. The past year's business was fairly satisfactory to those engaged in the trade here, the net profit cleared being about Tla. 500,000 it is said. It is too early yet to get any reliable neas from the country, but it is
satisfactory to learn that recent advices point to
an early resumption of business with Szechuen, The Yaru market is strong and advancing in sympathy with Cotton both at home and here, where it is now quated Tix. 4.80 for best machine ginned.
I
DOCES, WHARVES, AND GODOWNS.- small buyers at 325 and 326 per cent. prem, Hongkong and Whampoa Dooks have found closing firm at 327 and with buyers for April and June at equivalenta. Kowloon Wharves have cased up a little and are obtain- able at $82_ex dividend; no sales have been reported. Wanchais unchanged and without
business.
LANDS, HOTELs, and BuildINGS.—Hong- kong Lands have found small buyers at $78 and $79. Hotels have changed hands at $76 and $75, West Points at $181 and $18, and Humphreys Estates at $9 ex dividend.
COTTON-Hongkongs have been negotiated at $85 and are still in request at that rate. The Northern Mills being without local busi. ness are quoted from the latest Shanghai circulars.
MISCELLANEOUS.-Star Ferries, Green Is- lands, and Watsons remain unchanged and have changed hands at quotations. Fenwicks have improved to 833 after sales at 891, 83 j. and 832, and China Providents have been placed at $9.10 ex dividend for cash in fair lots and at slightly better rates forward,
