QUEEN MINES, LIMITED.
The first general statutory meeting of the Queen Mines, Ltd., was held on 17th Feb. at the Company's offices, Nos. 38 and 48, Queen's Road Central. Mr. H. Humphreys presided. The others present were-Messrs J. A. Jupp, S. Rustomjee, W. D. Jupp, A. P. Nobbs, A. H. Mancell, Sin Tak Fan, and W. C. Taylor.
Mr. TAYLOR read the notice convening the meeting.
The CHAIRMAN said-Gentlemen, this is a statutory meeting which we are obliged to hold within four months from the date of the forma tion of the company. The company was regis. tered on the 18th October last, and as you know was formed for the purpose of taking over the assets and liabilities of the New Balmoral Gold Mining Co., Limited (in liquidation), for the sum of $2,000, to be paid and satisfied by the issue to the shareholders of that company, of 100,000 shares of 25 cents each in Queen Mines, Limited, and for the further development of certain min. iug properties held by them, situate at Mount McDonald in New South Wales, Australia, more particularly that property known as the Queen of the Mount" Mine. This arrangement has been duly effected and the shares are being issued as fast as we.receive applications from the liquidator of the New Balmoral Company. When we took over the properties in the Queen of the Mount Mine a shaft had been sunk to a depth of 400 feet. We got to work as soon as possible, and after pumping the water

out of the shaft, chambers were cut and cross- cuts commenced both east and west, with a view of intercepting the reef at this level. After about six weeks' work a reet was cat in the West cross-cnt, three feet wide, which we have since learned, on assay, proved to be of an average value of 5 dwts. to the ton. We hear from Australia that our consulting export, Mr. J. W. Roberts, considered this a most encouraging result, as when cut some 50 feet above, the reef was barren of gold. On the 7th ult., we received a telegram from our agent in Sydney which we published in the papers, to the effect that a new reef had been cut, also in the west cross-cut, fire feet wide. an average sample of which had assayed 33 dwts to the ton. have not yet received full particulars of this new strike by letter, but we may say that we regard this as of the highest possible im- portance. It makes our prospects appear very bright indeed, and not only that, but the " Queen," being the deepest shaft on the field, it seems to point to the presence of good gold all over the Mount at a greater depth than has yet been attained. I do not think I need detain you longer, gentlemen; as soon as we receive further particulars from Australia they shall be circulated to the shareholders, and, meantime, I think we have every reason to con- gratulate ourselves on the promsing results al ready achieved. There is one other matter to which I have to refer, namely, to the election of a con. sulting committee. The Articles of Association provide that the consulting committee shall con- sist of Mr. S. Rustomjee and any other mem. bers appointed by the shareholders in meeting. I think it would be advisable to appoint an- other gentleman to consult with us and advise us in your interests, and would suggest the name of Mr. C Ewens. I therefore propose that Mr. Ewens be elected to the consulting committee.

Messrs. John D. Humphreys & Son inform us that they have received per Airlie the fol- lowing reports from Mr. J. W. Roberts, Mining Expert, on the Eureka and Queen Mines, dated Sydney, January 25th :---
EUREKA MINE,
In this mine the 150 feet level is being ex- tended with all possible speed with a view to connecting with "B" shaft. This drive has been in good ore all the way and is now some considerable distance north of any old workings. It appears as though we shall have a continuous run of payable stone at this level right through proved down to about 240 feet it will be seen to "B" shaft, and as the good shoot has been that there will be many thousands of tons of payable ore to work out.
At the 300 feet level the work done of late improvement is to be noted. Their work will has been putting up a rise, but so far no special
the stone faster. Particularly from this end we are raising good ore, showing gold very freely indeed, and the about 350 tons we have on top from this mine should render a good socount of itself. The southern end is very promising; it is full of rich leaders and tra versed by soft seams of carbonates of lime, carrying fine god, which is a sure indication that we are appro aching something good. I shall be very anxious to see this mine deeper, for all.. the richest gold seems to go under foot with the reef promising to get larger. We have in the Zulu no doubt a rich mine. The stone from here will be the second lot to pass through the battery.

QUEEN MINE,
I have a very pleasing report to make re- the reef in the Western crosscut. It is three specting this mine. As cabled to you we cut
feet thick and assays averaged about 5 dwts. showing au improvement in 50 feet from nil This is not payable, but it is encouraging as to 5 dwts. Last week, however, it was dis- covered that this rein did not constitute the whole of the lode. What appeared to be the Western wall was broken into and behind it more quartz was revealed. This was driven into and proved to be 5 feet wide. There can be no doubt as to this stone being of payable quality at the point where it has been intersected. The manager has forwarded us a small bag of specimens all showing gold-not very rich, but still very good as the metal is finely disseminated through the stone. He was instructed to break out a fair average sample of the full 5 feet. Rough tests which I have made show this bulk Assay results are not yet to hand. sample to be worth at least 1 oz. per ton.

The following despatch is published in the
Downing Street, 6th January, 1899. Sir, I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Major-General Black's Despatch No. 326 of the 24th of November, enclosing a copy of the interesting speech which he delivered to the Legislative Council reviewing the principal events that had occurred during his ten months'
kong: tenure of office as Acting Governor of Hong.

The period of General Black's adminis. tration was in many respects an eventful one for the colony, and I wish to express my ap. preciation of his able services as Acting Governor, and my satisfaction that they have - | been so cordially recognized by the members of the Legislative Council.-I have the honour to be, sir, your most obedient, humble servant,

In the Great Eastern Mine, we have carried the leading stope north from the rise 33 feet and the first stope above it 19 feet. The roof averages 4 feet and is of good average quality. We have broken quite 100 tons during the last ten days here, which with the lot on top already will go close on 400 tons, all of which is being carted to the battery as the first lot to be crushed. I have" started contractors on the sir❘ shaft, who have sunk during the last week 7 feet, or rather continued the old underlay shaft for this distance, breaking very fine stone in going down.

TACTICAL MILITARY EXERCISES
AT THE PEAK,
THE VOLUNTEERS TAKE PART, On Saturday afternoon both units of the Hong- kong Volunteer Corps paraded in full strength at Head-quarters for tactical exercises at the Peak - in conjunction with the troops of the garrison. The men were conveyed to the Peak by tram, the guns having been sent on in advance and parked near the Peak Hotel. His Excellency the Governor and a large number of civilians journeyed to the Peak to witness the opera tions, which were most interesting and instructive. All the troops of the Peak defence were in position shortly after three o'clock and were waiting to resist the supposed attack of a foros known to have landed on the south shore and marching on the ridge Magazine Gap ralley, or both. The defending by the Pokfulam valley or Aberdeen- forces consisted of the Peak section of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers reinforced by the Hongkong Volunteers and a company of the Hongkong Regiment, under the command of Major Morris, B.W.F. The attacking forces comprised the remaining companies of the Fusiliers and the Hongkong Regiment, under the command of Lieut.-Col Retallick, H.K.R. After an anxious wait the enemy was discovered advancing ap
