HONGKONG, 20th January-Auɛboom / in Hongkong and Shanghai Bank1 shares.cansed by the announcement of a dividend, and bonnis of £2 10s, has been the event of the week nnder review. A fair business has been transacted in other stocks at steady ratesen. Van a stricat 17 BANKS. In the early part of the week an announcement by the management of the Hong keng and Shanghai Bank that, subject to audity a dividend, of 30 shillings and a bonus of £la per sbare would be paid for the half-year ended. 31st December, suddenly sent the stook up to 260: per cent, prem,, and uns unsatisfied demand' contiquing the rate further gradually improved, with little or no business, to 281 and 282,+ at which a few lots changed hands for the end of the month and at which the market closes steady. On time a limited business was transacted, at rates between 274 and 283 for February, and between 278 and 287 per cent, prem. for March, the same difficulty in finding sellers existing as in the cash requirements. Further interest ing particulars of the report shortly to be issued may be found in the local press of the 16th instant. Nationals have suddenly sprung lu- to favour and, a demand at 817 to $18 brought out only a very few sellers; at time of closing shares are in demand at $20, and sales have been effected at that and at $204,

The market although decid dly strong in tone has certainly been quieter this week, which would seem to denote that the demand is slacking off as the end of the year approaches. The supply of available goods must be rapidly dwin ing however for during the last three weeks a very large Fusi ness appears to have gone through in Manchester makes of Shirtings and T-Clotha, much beyond the quantities that have been published. Latter ly the better rates of exchange obtainable for for ward transactions have induced holders to realise goods they hal declined to part with before at the then current prices, so, that quotations.do not exhibit any material change to speak of, but they are certainly no lower, in fact at Auction there is & decided improvement in Cottons. Here and very of which can be had within reasonable time, but speaking generally this is the exception, and

the dealers decline to commit themselves too far abend in view of the possibility of a change in thứ ariff before the goods arrive. Already a clan-e is being inserted in some forward contracts mak. ing the purchaser responsible for any increase in duty that the goods inny become liable to, a.m. cessary precau ion if the date of the intended in crease is not fixed and published some distance abead. In American goods there is not much going on at present, the only movement: we hear of being what are apparently resales in New York of small parcels of earlier, purchases that wer made, for this market, which of course will not affect the prospective supply. The enquiry en- tinues for Hankow, and the Szechuan merchant are sending forward a few orders, although the troubles in that Province are by no means over yet. The Tientsin dealers are still acting with great caution and are only buying for forward delivery, the demand for prompt clearance being restricted by the scarcity of ready money amongst them. The market is firm for Yarns, but for prompt clearance prices remain unchanged... In Indian Spinnings there has been very little for ward business as yet, but Japanese, and local Tarns are being taken at improving prices
