SHANGHAI, 7th January,-(From Mesars. Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report.- The New Year appears to have opened very au- spiciously in this trade, there being a good general demand all round. Although seemingly very confident of a substantial rise in prices at the opening of the market after the Native New Year holidays buyers will not make any advance to speak of at present, but are apparently content with picking up what cheap parcels there may be available, the degree of cheapness naturally de- penting on the forward arrangements that may have been made for Exchange. This of course handicaps holders who depend on the rates now. obtainable for, say, the end of next month, there being a difference of fully three per cent. It is therefore not an easy matter to assimilate prices, but under the present conditions on which the trade is carried on this must be expected. There are not the same number of cash transactions ti at are usually going on at this time of the year, the reason being that available funds have been largely employed in taking up forward Exchange contracts, chiefly against American goods, the advantage of which operators have had the as- tuteness to grasp. As usual only a sam!! pro- portion of the settlements are reported, but they give some idea of what is passing, and, judging by the pricus resales are published at, the local dealers seem to have struck good times again. The buyers for Hankow are the chief sustaining spirits in the market, the Tientsin men looking out for the plums. Attention has been paid al- most exclusively to Manchester makes of all des- criptions, Drills and Jeans being perhaps the ex- ceptions. No very extravagant quantities have been settled in any case, but the accumulation “öf small sales makes ap quite a respectable week's business, Auction prices must be considered satisfactory, as the goods have to be cleared this month.
